The man, the films, those blondes. Free DVD collection starting this Sunday

Star Wars is now so deeply embedded in our shared culture that more people are likely to catch a George Lucas reference than a Shakespeare quote. The Lucasfilm Star Wars fan film competition is evidence of the sheer range of tributes, expansions and (mainly) spoofs that can be extracted from the two-and-a-half good children's movies that George made in the Seventies and Eighties. The competition entries range from prosaic observations on what would happen if we really owned an AT-AT (tinyurl.com/599rzu), chilling public service broadcasts about the dangers of irresponsible light-sabre use (tinyurl.com/6osqpl) and an entire suite of mock-Grindhouse shorts that emphasise the Sci-Fi classic's pulpy roots (tinyurl.com/5tqdbe).
There's a wide range of styles on display, admittedly skewed towards the classic “action figure and handycam” aesthetic but also taking in slick-looking animation (tinyurl.com/5m9csm) and live action (tinyurl.com/5sbwmx). If not best, then at least timeliest, is a freewheeling parody of Diablo Cody's teen pregnancy comedy Juno entitled Padme (tinyurl.com/59zvfk). The entries most likely to win, though, are the movies that hew most closely to the original films, thereby at least going some way to sating the fans desire for a final trilogy of film in line with Lucas's original 1978 promise. Last Stand of the Jedi is one such, (tinyurl.com/62oemu)and despite some extremely wayward accent work, has all the elements that made the original Star Wars film such a worldwide success. Go online now and vote for your favourite. And if you're one of those rare beings that's never seen a Star Wars movie, it's not too late to catch up (tinyurl.com/694wzt).
