The wonderful thing about web series is that webisodes can be shorter and more hilariously pointless than a television series could ever afford to be. We would call crackle.com the new funnyordie.com (that Web watcher favourite) but it seems unfair since, unlike Will Ferrell’s comic labour of love, Crackle is actually owned by Sony Pictures, and its wealth of comedy sketches and series feature heavy product placement. That corporate agenda aside, the site is filled with comic gems featuring famous faces in just the way that funnyordie does.
The latest series The Line is about two friends, Josh and Duffy (Joe Lo Truglio – those who have seen Superbad will recall him as Francis the weird driver) as they score the coveted first spot in a queue outside a cinema, 11 days prior to the world premiere of one of the summer’s most highly anticipated films, FutureSpace.
As they sit and reminisce about the last time they sat in line for a movie, they discover that “things are a lot more hardcore now.” They must contend with obstacles such as the telepathic triplets of Zybar and their “five-minute rule”, “the spoiler” guy, and the cinema manager. “You people don’t work anywhere”, the latter barks through a megaphone. “You know how I know that? Because you can take 11 days off to sit in line. You people are worse than homeless, because this is a choice!”
Queen Rania of Jordan is no Grace Kelly. When Kelly met and married Prince Rainier of Monaco she abandoned the screen. It was deemed unseemly for a royal consort to broadcast herself around the world for the public to see. One might assume that this attitude would be a given for a Muslim country, but then, that’s just the kind of misconception that Queen Rania, long-known for her philanthropic work, wants to overturn. On her site youtube.com/user/QueenRania, the very beautiful and unveiled Queen offers viewers the chance to ask questions about Islam, which she will attempt to answer in video form. Very modern, surprising and accessible.
