Andy Warhol: The Complete Picture
Sky Arts, 8pm
If Andy Warhol were still alive, today would be his 80th birthday, and in honour of this Sky Arts is showing the first of an informative two-part profile of the iconic artist. There should be something new here even for the most ardent Warhol fan, as the film-makers have been given exclusive access to Warhol's extensive archive, which includes home movies, 4,000 audio tapes and even scrapbooks kept by the 12-year-old Warhol, containing a variety of curiosities - notably a signed photo of Mae West.
The Thirties in Colour
BBC Four, 9pm
The final part of this excellent series explores the work of Jack Cardiff, who started his career in the 1930s as a documentary film-maker, making nine short films for a series called World Windows. Cardiff later enjoyed Oscar success as one of Britain's finest cinematographers, working on films such as Black Narcissus.
The Burning Season
BBC Four, 10pm
Another exemplary Storyville, following the efforts of the Australian entrepreneur Dorjee Sun to save the rainforests and make himself a fortune in the process. Sun develops a scheme to create carbon credits from “avoided deforestation”, which allows big businesses to offset their emissions by protecting the vast swaths of the Indonesian rainforest that are cut and burnt each year - an area equivalent to 300 football pitches an hour. The skill of this film is how it manages to weave a strong narrative from what is essentially a series of business meetings and conferences, tweaking the collective consciousness with harrowing scenes of orang-utans fleeing the burning forests.
