Chaplin (1992)
ITV1, 1.45pm
Largely based on Charlie Chaplin’s selective memoirs, Richard Attenborough’s overly reverential biopic still finds room for some of the darker chapters in the London-born screen legend’s life. Robert Downey Jr succeeds in conveying Chaplin’s impish charisma, backed by a classy support cast including Kevin Kline, James Woods and Anthony Hopkins. (143min)
The Cincinnati Kid (1965)
Five, 1.50pm
A paean to the sensual thrills of stud poker, The Cincinnati Kid pits Steve McQueen’s young challenger against Edward G. Robinson’s reigning champ. With Depression-era New Orleans as his backdrop, Norman Jewison somehow manages to make card games look tense and sexy, largely thanks to McQueen’s implacable cool. (102min)
The Matador (2005)
BBC One, 10pm
Pierce Brosnan puts James Bond behind him as a boozy, sleazy hit man experiencing a midlife meltdown in this slight but enjoyable comic thriller. Greg Kinnear co-stars as the travelling salesman who becomes Brosnan’s reluctant confidant after a chance meeting in Mexico City. (96min)
Old School (2003)
BBC One, 11.35pm
Will Ferrell is typically goofy and overblown in this juvenile but energetic comedy about disillusioned thirtysomethingfriends (including Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn) regressing to adolescence by opening up their own college fraternity house. Some inspired moments. (91min)
A Simple Plan (1998)
BBC Two, 11.40pm
Before graduating to blockbusters with the Spider-Man films, the cult director Sam Raimi made this terrific neo-noir thriller about small-town brothers who stumble across $4 million in the snow-covered wreck of a light plane. Their “simple plan” is to hide the money until spring, but greed and family tensions lead to tragic consequences. Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton co-star. (123min)

Ocean’s Thirteen (2007)/ The Good German (2006, b/w)
Sky Movies Premiere, 8pm/10.05pm
A game of two very different halves from the director Steven Soderbergh and his favourite leading man, George Clooney. The all-star climax to the uneven heist trilogy, Ocean’s Thirteen ends on a high, returning to the glitzy Las Vegas setting of the first film.
A much darker and more ambitious experiment, The Good German pays stylish monochrome homage to classic film noir. Clooney’s cynical reporter makes a Faustian pact with his vampish ex-lover, played by Cate Blanchett, in the ruins of postwar Berlin. (122min/105min)
