1908: The First True Olympics
BBC Four, 8pm
The 1908 Olympic Games, held in White City, London, were full of controversy and established many international rivalries that still exist to this day. One hundred years on, this film uses archive footage, diaries, interviews and newspaper reports to tell the story of the 1908 Games, making for an interesting contrast with the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, currently under way in Beijing.
Call the Cops
BBC Four, 10pm
Authenticity is the byword for this fine documentary (part of the Britcops season) exploring the evolution of the police procedural on TV, starting with the genre's progenitor Dixon of Dock Green, through to The Sweeney, Between the Lines and Prime Suspect. The Bill comes in for much praise, being lauded by one former DCI as the best police drama ever, and the former police commander for the London Borough of Lambeth, Brian Paddick, reveals how the series creators' obsession with detail went as far as the sort of chairs used in the Sun Hill HQ. The documentary is preceded by Dixon of Dock Green (8pm).
How Not to Live Your Life
BBC Three, 10.20pm
After a pilot last year, BBC Three has commissioned a series of the sitcom created by Dan Clark, who plays Don Danbury, a morally vacant cretin who inherits his Nana's house on the same day he is fired from his job. The USP for this series are the narrative pauses in which Don offers instructions on what not to do in the given situation. This device creates some absurd situations that generate the odd laugh, but the whole thing is really a bit of a rip-off of Peep Show, but not as good. The character of Don looks like a drug-free Super Hans, with a personality modelled on Jeremy. But where Peep Show succeeded by making you love flawed characters doing horrible things, Don Danbury is just a git.
