Mark Watson Makes the World Substantially Better
Radio 4, 6.30pm
Mark Watson is not a comedian who is short of ambition. In 2006 he did a stand-up show in which he wrote a novel with his audience. Then last year came his methodical deconstruction of the Seven Deadly Sins. His new series picks up where he left off, only with the moral lever now switched to the virtues. This week that makes for a blissfully madcap journey around the concept of courage. Extremely silly songs about being brave (from poet Tim Key) complete the picture, my favourite of which is “ignore peer pressure - unless you're a structural engineer who is building a pier, in which case don't put lives at risk.”
Proms 2008
Radio 3, 7.30pm
The Proms welcome back the the young Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, who first appeared with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra at the Albert Hall as an emergency substitute, and now returns as their music director for a typically dramatic programme of Berlioz and Ravel. Meanwhile, the interval feature at 8.20pm explores the world of the Vikings with a vivid tale of Dark Age sex-trafficking and slavery.
The Greatest Athlete Never Known: The Jim Hines Story
1Xtra, 2pm
The 1968 Olympics are often remembered for the black power salute given by Tommie Smith and John Carlos, but there was another black American athlete who made headlines in Mexico City, too. That was Jim Hines, whose world record for the 100m was to last for some 15 years. This programme tells his story.
