Would Like to Meet Again
BBC Two, 8pm
Five years ago, the makeover series, Would Like to Meet gave hope to people like me up and down the land. However lonely, ugly, idiotic, charmless, tongue-tied, acne- ridden and sexually frustrated we were, a group of experts would come along and transform us from hopeless blobs of lard into irresistible magnets for the opposite sex. In this new series, “sexpert” Tracey Cox joins the style expert Jay Hunt and the confidence coach Jeremy Milnes to track down 12 of their original acolytes to find out how they have got on.
Dr Alice Roberts: Don’t Die Young
BBC Two, 8.30pm
Dr Alice Roberts gives a crash course in the ear, nose and throat department. If you miss this superb series, here are some useful pointers. Nine million people in the UK suffer from hearing loss, so don’t stuff cotton buds or billiard cues into your ears. If you go clubbing regularly, spend £20 on a pair of good-quality earplugs that will reduce the sound to a safe level. Finally,
if you are one of the 600,000 people in the UK who suffer from sleep apnoea — whereby you stop breathing in your sleep — it is a good idea to lose weight. Quality of life is generally higher for those who are not deaf, exhausted or dead.
My Strange Brain
Five, 11.05pm
In what must be the understatement of the week, Professor Rosaleen McCarthy, head of the neuropsychology department at Southampton General Hospital, says simply: “The brain is a very complicated place.”
It sure is. One poor man suffers from confabulation, in which he inhabits a world filled with false memories. Another suffers from visual agnosia: he sees what you and I see, but his brain is unable to process the data. Another lady is convinced that her husband is an imposter. “Life,” he says, “is what it is. It’s a matter of acceptance.”
