Jade Goody’s live-in boyfriend has been jailed for assault two weeks after she was diagnosed with life-threatening cervical cancer.
Jack Tweed asked for a suspended sentence so he could care for Goody during her treatment, but was given 18 months in prison for attacking a 16-year-old boy with a golf club.
Today, Chelmsford Crown Court heard how the 21-year-old, who appeared on last year’s controversial Celebrity Big Brother, planned the December 2006 attack on Daniel Steele with his friend James Mattock.
Tweed, who was living at reality TV star Goody’s Ongar home at the time of the attack, had earlier been abused by local youths and was involved in an altercation with a group of teenagers, including Steele.
The teenager, now 18, was left with bruising to his head, face and chest.
Tweed pleaded not guilty and denied any knowledge of the assault at his trial in July, but at today’s sentencing his lawyer said, in mitigation, that his client had lost his temper after being the victim of "sustained abuse" by local youths.
Andre de Moller said Tweed had attacked Daniel in order to teach the teenager "a lesson".
"His motives were to teach a young person, who had been a ringleader in the group of people, which was constantly outside his house - to teach that young person a lesson," said Mr de Moller.
"Yes, it is taking the law into his own hands. I cannot deny that, and it is wrong to do so."
Tweed, who had previously split up with Goody, recently moved back into her home after she was told, during a stint on India’s Big Brother equivalent Bigg Boss, that she had advanced cervical cancer. He was supporting her through her cancer treatment and caring for her children, his lawyer said.
Mr de Moller said: "It is plain, your honour, that this lady has a long road ahead of pain and distress. She is the mother of two young children."
He asked the judge to suspend any prison sentence because of those "exceptional circumstances".
But the judge, Recorder Mark Lucraft QC, said both Tweed and Mattock would spend nine months in prison before being released on licence.
"It was a frightening scene and a traumatic experience," said the judge.
"You went, it seems to me, with one purpose - to attack and to have a fight."
He added: "Hitting someone about the head with a weapon is an extremely dangerous thing to do."
The judge said both men were equally "culpable" - although he accepted that there had been "some goading and provocation".
Tweed showed no emotion as they were led from the dock.

12 weeks is good enough for him he is no diferent from anyone else if you do the crime then do the time he should have got longer

although I understand we can´t take justice into our own hands, we have to accept the system is not working. It seems to be protecting the criminals, leaving the rest of us defensless. There are plenty of sad, dramatic stories. We are at a critical point. Something needs to be done.

I understand he had to be punished for what he did, but what about the kids who were responsible for the abuse. We all know how frightening just walking is as these yobs prowl the streets picking on anyone they can, usually the elderly. When it is resipricated they scream louder than anyone
beryl, london,
I'm all for self-defence laws. If someone hits you then I cannot criticise you for hitting them back, twice as hard if possible to show them that's its unacceptable.
However it is a cornerstone of our legal system that verbal provocation can NEVER be sufficient to justify a physical assault.

He seemed a very polite young man on Celebrity Big Brother, e.g. making tea for the real 'celebrities'. It does seem that poor Jade's days are numbered, so it is to be hoped that Jack will be allowed at least compassionate parole.
Dr Johnson, Nottingham, England
Jack needs to be with Jade to gice her strength, jade has children that jack holds a big position for...if not to support jade then they should have adjourned the trial for the sake of support for the poor little children. However i will add that what Jack done was incredlbly wrong
melissa hamilton, nottingham, uk
I have to say that yes Jack does deserve to be punished for his actions. As does the 16year old that hurtled abuse at him and Jade for the weeks to come. However sentenced to 18 months is absolutely absurd. Drivers get less for carelessly mowing down and killing pedestrians.
Lucy Hedges, Reading,
if he was going to teach him a lesson he dint have to beat him up with a flamin golf club that jus flamin stupid especially when hes sixteen n he wos wot 17 18 or summat its wrong n serves him wright i wudnt hit ny1 older than me or younger than me id jus give em abuse back

Nick, in Spain, 16 year olds are not "children" today. Maybe in the legal sense, but that is all. If you lived in England you would know that to challenge a group of street corner 16 year olds who are up to no good, is to run the real risk of having your head kicked in and being left for dead.

A member of a chavalcade gets attacked by the current boyfriend of a has-been slobebrity.
The chav is beaten up, the boyfriend ends up in jail. Win-win isn't it?

nick in spain,no what he did was wrong but most 16 yr olds carry weapons now
steve, birmingham, england
While I don't agree with his actions, nor do I have much much empathy for these pseudo celebs; I can understand why he did what he did. Mouthy, hoody wearing, kids are on the streets of every town - threatening people and generally causing trouble. When will the police sort them out?
