We truly do live in an age of marvels. Barely a day goes by without the announcement of a new wonder-device in Times Online's Mousetrap blog (tinyurl.com/5crye6). If you were to watch the promotional video tinyurl.com/2jxusj for Microsoft's innovative “Surface” table computing environment even the most resolutely level-headed among you might well succumb to an ill-focused techno-lust, desperate to acquire one of these amazing devices even if you were not entirely sure what you could possibly do with it once you had it.
That lust would dissipate though, once you'd seen the spot-on satirical redubbing of another slice of “Surface” footage (at tinyurl.com/2mmecf). It's a clip that skewers our collective desire for silicon-based gewgaws so accurately that, once it has been viewed by a critical mass of Times readers, will surely drive the share price of Comet into freefall.
The relentlessly rising tide of new electronic gadgetry isn't composed entirely of Emperor's New Clothes frippery though. Without cheap and accessible video editing technology we wouldn't have marvellous little clips of “art for art's sake” creativity such as Rorschach's Journal (at tinyurl.com/5acdwp), based on Watchmen, the forthcoming feature film. Watchmen is a thinking-man's, comic book-based movie that, even though it's not due in cinemas until March 2009, has provoked considerable excitement among the more dedicated members of the web community (and, fittingly, our own Blockbuster Buzz blog tinyurl.com/6gtagt) and has already engendered a number of brilliantly creative fan-made trailers on YouTube.
What did we do before there was YouTube to help us to share our creativity, our enthusiasms or our sheer silliness? If the deliciously implausible YouTube in 1985 (tinyurl.com/5qz3us) is to be believed, YouTube has always been with us - spreading the sheer joy of watching cats falling down the back of sofas since before the dawn of the digital era.
