Increasingly, proper film-makers using proper equipment and proper actors have been uploading short films to social networking sites such as YouTube and MySpace to get publicity and of course, that all-important interest from investors.
It's hard to tell why Mat Kirkby has put his short film Hard to Swallow online (tinyurl.com/6arwas). He's already an award-winning promo director, he's got a great cast, including Richard Herring, Nicholas Burns, Claire Keelan and James Lance - the latter three also all star in Thursday's amusing newsitcom No Heroics (another reason why we're flagging up this short) - and the film's already been to Sundance. Perhaps he just wants our feedback. If he did we would probably tell him it's an hilariously observant slice-of-life comedy. If you're a post- watershed web watcher who's in the market for comical dinner party hijinks with a conclave of foul-mouthed thirtysomethings, then Hard to Swallow is mightily droll. There's a lot less tidying up than after a real drug-fuelled dinner party, too.
Bryony Makes a Zombie Movie (tinyurl.com/4emuhd) is an attempt to “crowdsource” a short film, inviting web watchers to comment on the original YouTube pitch with their own suggestions for plot and direction ideas. It's received plenty of zombie movie-related feedback, with well over 3,000 comments to date. It's also been well publicised, with more than 300,000 people watching the video on YouTube. It's receiving a little bit more publicity right now, because you're reading about it, and it has also garnered the all-important finance, with BBC Three commissioning a documentary about this pioneering creative process at www.bbc.co.uk/zombies.
After a hard day's work, though, even watching people have a comically tense dinner party can be a bit taxing. That's when you need the Answer Me This Podcast, a freewheeling advice column that addresses all the most pressing questions in modern life, and presents the answers in a format you can enjoy with your eyes closed answermethis.wordpress.com
