To coincide with Sunday’s International Day of Peace, Current TV is running a weekend of films under the title Bloodshed & Brotherhood, looking at conflicts around the world from various perspectives, and exploring global hopes for peace. You can also access these films online through the Current TV website.
One of the highlights is Mogadishu Madness, an excellent piece of old-school war reportage from 2006, in which two Current TV journalists fly solo – there’s no safety in numbers in here – and head out to Somalia to investigate life under the Islamic Court Union regime. Despite relative calm in the capital, Mogadishu, it was still a very dangerous place and a difficult environment to work in, which makes for fascinating viewing.
Another standout film features Emmanuel Jal – a child soldier from Sudan, forced into service at the age of 7 after his mother was killed. Jal was eventually rescued by an aid worker and smuggled into Kenya where he became a rapper, using his harrowing story as the basis for his lyrics. His music is pretty good too, mixing African influences with a straight-up hip-hop delivery.
Proving that you can find humour in even the tensest of situations, Middle East Laughs follows two Israeli and two Palestinian comedians as they travel around the region performing their stand-up routines. My favourite joke comes from Ray Hanania, a Palestinian-American, who tells the following gag to a group of Israeli soldiers: “You sacrifice your life, you get 72 virgins – in Arabic it’s backwards – we get one virgin but she’s 72 years old.”
Bebo’s new online documentary series Meet the Freshers starts today (and continues every Friday), and promises to reveal what freshers (first year university students) really get up to. “Get really drunk and have sex with everyone,” giggles one eager female fresher. Fretful parents should probably avoid tuning in – ignorance really is bliss.
