Greatest Cities of the World with Griff Rhys Jones
ITV1, 9pm
This new series from Griff Rhys Jones looks set to be far more fun - and informative - than his recent, earnest investigation into anger. Visiting the first of his greatest cities - New York - he serves up a smorgasbord of unusual experiences. He dangles on the end of a rope to clean the windows of a skyscraper and helps “New York's Strongest” to collect the trash. He tours the Steinway piano factory; goes to a Jewish wedding; pays his respects to a new-born baby; and auditions for a gospel choir. It's entertaining, unpretentious and filled with curios.
Silent Witness
BBC One, 9pm
Everyone in this superior two-parter is flirting with - or using - someone else, in blatant disregard of Home Office guidelines. A young medical student on work experience makes eyes at Harry and a criminal anthropologist poleaxes Leo. Combined with all this romance among the corpses, there are victims subjected to hideous mutilation, devious oligarchs, brusque coppers, sympathetic bodyguards and ripe PR supremos. You will need to concentrate hard to keep abreast of the story, but the teasing relationships among the team are a lot of fun, and Phil Davis and Neil Dudgeon are as watchable as ever.
Paul Merton in India
Five, 9pm
Paul Merton spends eight weeks in India looking at quirkier sides of the subcontinent. His journey gets off to a bolshy start when - having just stepped off the aeroplane with no sleep - he is bundled off to a finishing school in Delhi and taught to burp. Paul Merton is not a person who responds well to schooling. But the highlight of this episode is the festival of Shiva in Gujarat, where he becomes the follower of a naked guru, gets stoned and watches disciples perform astonishing tricks with their penises. He is entirely lost for words.
The Family
Channel 4, 9pm
Dad needs to lighten up a bit. Of course teenage children are difficult - that's the whole point of them. If a daughter opts to go out clubbing all night rather than staying at home and studying the Corn Laws, it won't help to go on at her like a dog with a bone. There has to be a better approach. Suggestions on a postcard, please, to The Family, c/o Channel 4, 124 Horseferry Road, London, SW1P 2TX.
