Live European Rugby Union

The Heineken Cup, Europe’s elite competition, kicks off for another season and Sky Sports will be showing up to nine live matches on each weekend from the first four rounds of the group stages. The action gets under way at Thomond Park, home to the holders Munster, where the visitors are the French debutantes Montauban. Beforehand, Montpellier face Bristol in the European Challenge Cup, rugby union’s answer to the Uefa Cup.

Guitar Night

BBC Four, from 9pm

The British guitarist Julian Bream did more to popularise classical guitar than virtually anyone else in the UK in the 20th century, and his tastes ranged from Jimi Hendrix to Renaissance lute music. Dozens of composers wrote music specially for him, and his recordings are legion.

In Legends (9pm), Andrew McGregor introduces a compilation of Bream’s performances from the BBC archives of 1962-79. Guitar Heroes on Later with Jools Holland (10pm) features performances from Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Santana and Jack White. And if you missed Imagine: The Story of the Guitar last Sunday there’s a chance to see it at 11pm.

Paramount Comedy 1, 9pm

Did anyone think that when Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s animated comedy started in 1997 that it would still be going strong after 11 years? At the start of season 12 — the 168th episode — Cartman and Kyle are infected with the Aids virus and turn to the basketball legend Magic Johnson to help them to find a cure.
