He has invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, overseen an economic boom and a brutal bust but now George W. Bush's days as president are almost numbered. Oliver Stone's reaction to Bush's imminent departure from office? Make a film about the President's life (watch the trailer at tinyurl.com/6s7vr7). Screening at The Times BFI London Film Festival on Thursday, W. looks at how a man who was once the reckless black sheep of the family made it to the White House.
Here at the Web Watcher we thought we'd take our own look back over Bush's presidency. Of course, we're not nearly as mature as Mr Stone, so we will entirely ignore foreign policy, the economy and healthcare and go straight to Bushisms.
Remember the time he encouraged an audience to ask themselves “How is our children learning?” What about the time he confused his own gender, telling a crowd “Karen is with us, a West Texas girl just like me.” Then there was the moment he sympathised with a nation trying “to put food on your family”.
Still, let's not reduce his two terms in office to mangled phrases and stuttering syntax, there was slapstick, too. In front of TV cameras, Bush banged his head as he boarded a helicopter, dropped a dog he was given to hold and tripped over in front of a raft of press. Watch all the glorious moments at tinyurl.com/5cxqcu.
Of course, it wasn't just Bush's mistakes that provided amusement - the comedians impersonating Bush's mistakes were also hilarious. Will Ferrell managed an exceptional take on the President (tinyurl.com/5po2xt) and Frank TV came up with a genius clip of Bush trying to woo back a mistrusting America (tinyurl.com/6gxntb). But the gong for most creative employment of a Bush look-a-like must go to MadTV which rerecorded, complete with video, the Black Eyed Peas track, My Humps as My Slump. Featuring a rapping Bush, the clip is a must-see. Watch it at tinyurl.com/6cmb3v.
