It’s phasers in cyberspace between Star Trek’s Captain Kirk and his lieutenant Sulu.
William Shatner, star of the classic Sixties sci-fi series, has laid into former co-star George Takei after Takei failed to invite him to his wedding.
Shatner launched the broadside during a video interview posted on his blog site, in which he blames his onetime co-star's snub on a “sickness” and a “psychosis”, although there is no indication that Takei has ever suffered from a mental illness.
Takei, who announced that he was gay in 2005, married his partner in a ceremony in California last month. While Walter Koenig, who played Chekov, was best man, Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhuru, was maid of honour, and Leonard Nimoy, better known as Spock was also in attendance, Shatner was left off the list.
In the video, Shatner mocks Takei for keeping his homosexuality secret for so long, saying, “talk about festering.”
“The whole thing makes me feel badly,” Shatner says in the video. “The poor man – there’s such a sickness there. It’s so patently obvious there’s a psychosis there.”
Referring to Takei’s memoirs, in which he criticises Shatner for his behaviour on the Star Trek set, he says: “I don’t know what his originally thing about me was. I have no idea. I didn't read his book that was printed several years ago, but apparently I didn't let somebody have a close-up."
And in a dismissal of Takei’s role in the series he adds: “I literally don’t know him. I didn’t know him very well on the series, he would come on set for a day a two. As evidenced by the part he played…I didn’t know the man, but he’s continued to speak badly about me for all these years.”
“What kind of sickness is going on in that man,” he continues. “There must be something else festering in George that makes him so unhappy and to take it out on me a relative stranger.
“You’d think he’d have this epiphany and say … I wish him well. I'm so happy that I wish him well. But instead what he does is make this big deal about not inviting me to his wedding.
“You need to ask what sickness is going on in the man. There must be something else going on inside George that’s festering. Why would he go out of his way to denigrate me. It’s sad that the man cannot find enough peace in his life, to forgive or shut up about it. I feel nothing but pity for him.”
This is not the first time Shatner has used his blog to make a personal attack. He lashed out at JJ Abrams in a video post after the producer of the new Star Trek film refused to offer Shatner a cameo role.
