Andrew Billen: Ross needs to grow up | BBC Newsbeat editor defends broadcast BBC statement in full | Transcript: the offensive calls | Comment Central: what the media is saying | Do 18,000 complaints matter? | Sachs' granddaughter: cruel Brand and Ross
Russell Brand tonight resigned as a host on BBC Radio 2 amid the ongoing controversy over their prank phone calls to the veteran Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs.
The comedian stepped down from his show hours after the corporation announced it had suspended him along with Jonathan Ross.
Former heroin addict Brand has presented his programme since November 2006 and is thought to be paid more than £200,000 a year by the BBC. Brand said in a statement that he took “complete responsibility” for the incident and that he got “caught up in the moment”.
Speaking at the door of his home in Kilburn, north London Mr Sachs tonight said: “I respect his decision. I hope he moves forward, I really hope he does.
“It might be a big turning point in his life.”
The BBC had announced that both men's shows would be taken off air while an internal BBC investigation into the incident was carried out.
BBC Director General Mark Thompson has also apologised to Mr Sachs for the calls which he said had caused “severe offence”. He said it was inappropriate for the pair to broadcast until the investigation was complete.
“This gross lapse of taste by the performers and the production team has angered licence payers," said Mr Thompson.
“I am determined that we satisfy them that any lessons will be learnt and appropriate action taken.
"I have been asked to report to the Trust’s Editorial Standards Committee before the end of this week and will discuss with the trust the findings of the report and the actions I propose.”
In his statement Mr Brand said he had had an apology accepted by Mr Sachs.

Are people to believe that Russell was being deliberately mean ?
We are definitely going the way of the States narrow minded provincials...
Everybody stand to attention and march out the door left right left right etc...
Glo, Vancouver, Canada
What is parliments realy for? To debate radio shows by the looks of things. Now we know why the country is in a mess. Gorden Brown it should be you that resigns, for wasting time on such unimportant issues. you and that other consertive toff have just lost the plot.
John, Barnsley, uk
dont you just love russell! some people need to get a sense of humour!!
keep it up russell, is this the 3rd job you have lost! its not you its the rest of the population for being to stiff lol
stacey, london, uk
At last viewers/listerners reactions have been recognised and listened to by those `in charge'. It is a sad reflection that those who earn large salaries for perhaps little talent feel they can do anything they want without consequences. A hard dose of reality has descended. More decency please!
Mary, Worcester,
It's laughable that Gordon Brown managed to get his bit of publicity out of it.
A man who's policies have totally failed to curb the anti-social behaviour by the youth of this country.
If there was any discipline and punishment for this kind of behaviour in schools it wouldn't happen later on.
garth marenghi, bolton,
Finally something worth paying the licence fee for! Absolutely brilliant! I laughed at every call! Thank God for people who aren't scared to say whatever they think. A small % of the population have been annoyed by this, the rest of us love it. I thought we lived in a democracy, bring them both back
Dan, Burnley, UK
In the past I have enjoyed Brand & Ross but those who think this funny must have a really sad sense of humour. Would they laugh if their own daughters had been revealed and laughed at over the radio for having had sex with one of the presenters. The Producer also should be suspended.
Gareth Williams, Powys,
There is a far larger pitcure here. It is not so much that these two 'entertainers' made inappropriate comments, but the wider effect on the UK as a whole. The UK has become an immoral cesspit as mentioned, and it needs to change. This maybe be a good starting point. Reality TV does not help either.
ipd, Tokyo, Japan
Yes- Jonathan and Russel have made me laugh in the past, but lets face it the general public should not have to pay for their increasingly tasteless tack via the TV licence fee. They obviously thought their popularity made them "untouchables".
Steve, Carrick, Antrim
The size of the reaction has little to do with the 'prank' phone call. It is a response to the level of arrogance of privileged elements within our society. The bankers who have wrecked our economy are not answerable to us but the BBC, Ross and Brand are. People are angry.
Terry, Edinburgh,
AtheneS, if people my age are so desperate to jump on the bandwagon and slate anyone or anything which you disagree with (Your personal opinion, bear in mind), perhaps listening to editorial guidance from 12 year olds would be more grounded in reality.
Samuel, Preston, England
Jonathan from London.....How can you call Chris Moyle a comedian??
Christina, Bedford, UK
The possibility of never seeing Russell Brand on TV again has quite cheered me up on a gloomy afternoon. I can't say I've ever found him entertaining or amusing and his eccentricity seems far from genuine. As for Jonathan Ross - he's in a completely different league from the overly-hyped Brand.
Jules, Woking,
Here's a thought., Russell could make amends by communicating to his fans that treating people contemptuously is bad. This is something their parents clearly haven't taught them.
And James, London, the difference is that Chrissie was knowingly in that situation, Sachs and his family weren't.
j griffiths, manchester, england
My god we have become as bad as the Americans at jumping on any bandwagon going! When will we develop minds of our own again or is it lost forever?
Neil, Birmingham, England
The BBC should be taking full responsibility for this mess and sticking up for its comedians! After all, it was a BBC producer who approved the show for the airwaves as it was pre-recorded. It is sad that the company should pass the blame and not stick up for its stars. Makes them look weak.
Nancy J Hancock, Venice Beach, CA, United States
Ref. Mr. McKenzie's comments: round objects,
Steve, Argyll,
Comedians have to produce constant new material which can't be consistently brilliant and is habitually abusive (Graham Norton, Chris Moyle) - the BBC editorial process should determine at what point the line is crossed. It was here, but don't blame the presenters- fire the editors. A witch hunt.
Jonathan, London, UK
Russell Brand will be fine - he has the start of a Hollywood career, writing, stand up and presenting. Jonathan Ross is mainly a presenter and he probably won't get 6 million a year from an independent station since they are all struggling hard for advertising revenues. Not surprised he's hanging on
sara, manchester,
Solidarity - as one of the people who totally enjoyed your shows on radio and TV - every one of them. Including film performances Russell and Jonathan (Shrek barmaid) I would like to say how sorry I am that this has happened. Hope it blows over and that we get you both back real soon. SORRY! TL UK
T, Salisbury, UK
what kind of media frenzy about someone being a disgrace in his job do you think would force the prime minister to resign? we've had ten years of offensive prank calls, but he has thick skin.
jem, london, uk
Jonathan Ross is the funniest man on British television. I want him back!
Charles Lambert, Rome, Italy
Good riddance!
Peter Sammons, Cambridge, UK
its just stupid,it was a joke, get over it ,i believe in the jelousy theory ,when oasis were at ther height in the 90s the press had no choice but to go along for the ride because they were so popular but they couldnt wait to start pulling them down a peg or two, leave it be now,let it go.
matt, stoke, uk
What an absolute farce. Russell Brand and Jonathon Ross are well known for politically incorrect humour that may offend others. The only failure in this case was a result of the BBC editors decision to ignore Andrew Sachs' opinion that it should not be broadcast. As for politicians intervention...??
Rick, Preston, Lancashire
I suspect the fact that the number of complaints has gone from 9 to more than 27,000 shows how many licence fee payers can't stand them.
Rick , Manchester,
As usual with this country, everything gets blown out of proportion. Yes Brand and Ross made a mistake, an apology would have sufficed. but everyone has to interfere. surely Gordon Brown has more important things to worry about, such as how he has single handidly destryoyed the British economy!!
Chris, Manchester, England
As a long-time fan of the Russell Brand show, where was David Cameron and all the other 17,999 complainers when Russell suggested a threesome between Chrissie Hynde (from The Pretenders) and her daughter...when live on the phone to Chrissie? I fail to see any difference! This is absurd!
James , london,
It takes 46,165 licence payers to pay Ross's salary. I challenge the BBC to find that number who are happy about him.
The BBC, different because of the unique way they're funded. Pay up or go to prison! Who cares whether you want to watch.
cliff, Reading ,
Come back, Desmond Carrington, David Jacobs and 'The Light Programme'; all is forgiven
richie, wexford,
To call them comedians, pushing the envelope is a bit much.
Those two (Ross and Brand) couldn't push their way through of a Post Office pension que.
Weak acts (both) resorting to base level humour, in a desperate attempt to appear cutting edge. Not cutting edge, but just rude. Byebye Brand \o
Neil, Chester, England
REALLY, calm down dears!! this is all so silly now! so we can have terrorists calling for the murder of the 'infadels' on british streets & thats freedom of speech BUT (fair enough they went too far) But a joke in poor taste has the MP's calling for heads to roll!! GET REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mel, Peterborough,
Bring back Brand
agp, Edinburgh, uk
Values and standards are two concepts that appear to have been abandoned by the BBC and a sizable section of the English public in their scramble to make money out of "celebrities" in the entertainment world.
Perhaps the focus on entertainment rather than reality explains the mess we are in today.
Phaedrus 2, Benalla, Australia
This Brand character has always been a talentless boor. You'll take him back though. He's of you.
John, Vancouver, USA
It a shame to see the funniest show in radio go because of this ridiculous media frenzy...... Your show will be sorely missed Russell
Paul, Essex, UK
After this witch hunt I DO NOT want to see Georgina Baillie on TV in any film or have a career off the back of this!!! This lady will have an agent and a PR company by now funny old thing!
john, poole, uk
Well, we've just lost a great radio talent. Someone who pushed the boundaries and made radio edgy again. Yet more over-reaction by the media. If only people were this passionate that they would complain about something that's a real issue. Typical uneducated British public. Lets get sensible people!
Oliver Collings, Milton Keynes, England
The BBC has damaged its reputation by such dumbing down and poor editorial control. Comics should be talented enough to make people laugh without it being at someone else's expense and in such poor taste. The fact that Mssrs Ross and Brand are so overpaid is also inappropriate.
ruskee, London,
The commercial media got what they wanted - a new and popular talent away from the BBC. By whipping up the outrage they have managed to force the split and damage the hugely successful BBC Radio 2. I don't much like either of them, think they shouldn't have done it, but the attention is crazy.
Dave, Bristol, UK
I'm from Canada and take much pleasure getting my weekly fix of the Russell Brand show podcasts. The guy cracks me up every time...To end the show over this...?!?!? Come on...?Ultimately, Russells fans are paying for his lapse of judgment. I'm very sad to see the show come to an end.
Mark Hesse, Toronto, Canada
Maybe, at last, the establishment is realising that the silent majority actually has views and we are the ones who pay the bills. If only this realisation were applied to politics.
Supporters of this 'humour' are unoffended simply because they have never been taught how to treat others decently.
j griffiths, manchester, england
Why was this story put before more important stories on the news, such the financial crisis. Piers Morgan even had the cheek to say what Ross and Brand had done was comparable to presenters, such as Richard Bacon, taking drugs. A coincidence that Morgan is filming a rival to Ross's superb chat show?
Ben Smith, Loughborough,
To Tony the Yank - the BBC is not independent. And we "customers" are obliged by law, if we have a TV, to pay close to 200 dollars a year to the BBC or risk a fine or imprisonment, regardless of whether we watch the BBC. The outrage is about the unbearable, immoral cesspit that is the UK in 2008.
S.C. Huldig, London,
If this means we will be seeing less of the mildly irritating Woss on TV Ill be happy, perhaps the BBC could divert some of his ridiculous salary into producing some interesting new viewing.
Mike, Nottm, UK
Honestly. Over reacting?
I think an apology would have been suffice.
I doubt these 18,000 complaints were from people who even listen to Brand's show.
R C, Belfast,
At the end of the day it was pre-recorded show and a conversation between these to lads can be heard in various guises in every Pub, gym, cafe, nightclub, sporting event, anywhere were a couple of guys are having a laugh. The whole thing is the responsibility of Bosses and Producers.
Chris, Southampton,
The real scandal is the amount of money Jonathon Ross is paid. Who decided he is worth £6 million per year? In my opinion, he is not worth a tenth of that. Licence payers money wasted; surely?
James, Manchester,
Tim, I fully understand your point of view but I hope you are not in any way comparing the genius that is Chris Morris (probably the greatest satirist ever) with the dire Ross and marginally less dire Brand?
James, Manchester,
Many of the comments here seem to reflect a belief in the inalienable right to be entertained whatever the cost to another human being.
Joss, Kent, UK
For heavens sake. He's said sorry he's resigned, all comedians (good ones) tread a fine line. Bury it now people.
Andy, Perth , UK
In the context of the show the calls were highly amusing and not nearly as offensive as is being suggested, which is why only 2 complaints were made from actual listeners in the 2 days after the show. The barrage of complaints came only from those who read out of context snippets in the press.
jack, Glasgow, United Kingdom
I would greatly appreciate it if the Prime Minister could concentrate on trying to ease the recession and economic woes rather than commenting on a joke that was 'not in the best possible taste' and so unsurprisingly backfired.
Anne, London,
Absolutely ridiculous outcome, a load of middle aged puritans getting their knickers in a twist over a relatively innocuous bit of banter. And as for Gordon Brownand Dave Cameron, surely they have something better to do with their time?
J Tickle, Liverpool,
....And I thought Americans were overly sensitive!
Elisa, Las Vegas, USA
Truth hurts buddy.
I think people are just jealous of how AWESOME having their job must be. This has done no favours the Brit reputation for prudishness and "making tea instead".
jimmy, London,
Is there any reason that Parliament should be involved in something as trivial as this? Perhaps the Beeb, as a semi-governmental creature, does make this a matter for the national legislature. But then you should wonder if this isn't a good reason government and media should not mix.
James, Toms River, New Jersey, USA
There is nothing wrong with maintaining standards and every single one of the ignorant, pc, liberal parasites from the DG down working for the BBC should get this into their heads. They only seem to understand it when they get caught.
David, Hamilton, New Zealand
Its their jobs to both test the limits and push the boundries of comedy, which both entertainers do very well! There's nothing wrong with what they done. Its the very nature of comedy in this day and age, and thank god for that! We have all moved on from 'last of the summer wine' people!
Charles, Norwich, England
Can someone explain to this Yank why your prime minister would even consider issuing a statement on some lewd show segment much less go call for action on it?
I thought the BBC is independent of the government and earns revenue by charging customers? It seems very unbecoming of the office.
Tony, Los Angeles, USA
Lucy, gloucestershire, UK
People will "get over it" once the BBC has taken appropriate action.
Gavin, Glasgow,
This entire debacle has generated publicity not only for Brand, who is a shrewd self-promoter, but also for the BBC, who needed to be seen to be 'affirming values'. For all the apparent indignation, young Miss Baillie is privately punching the air over her new found 'instant celebrity' status.
Matei Clej, London, United Kingdom
I wonder how much Georgina Baillie and her gothic burlesque group profit from this story.
claire, ipswich , uk
Good riddance. Brand is a talentless parasite who had no place running his own show.
Dante, Gosford, Australia
Tim of London - big difference - Morris' programme was a spoof. This was a real call to a real person about another real person. To test how "searingly funny" you really think it is, how would you react if I slept with your mother, then phoned YOU up four times to tell you how good she was?
Bill Hobbs, Southampton, UK
This is becoming ridiculous now - get over it people.
Lucy, gloucestershire, UK
I just wonder how many of the people complaining about their comments have listened to the show . Set in context what was said did not sound offensive but searingly funny. It all seems very reminiscent of the witchhunt conducted against Chris Morris after his Brass Eye on paedophilia
Tim, London,
If joe public had done this they woul have been in court. Why waste ink on these two just sack them and forget them and move on.
Peter, Stockholm, Sweden
I have listened to the whole thing and truly it is not that bad at all !. half the time they are apologizing to this person. I truly can't see what the fuzz is about. I think some people are just naturally over sensitive and therefore should turn the radio OFF if they really can't take it???
sifs, london, uk
I've personally kept quiet on this issue but now I just can't because this is just beginning to get stupid, politicians getting involved over something like this, since when did Britain become so pathetic, apologise and leave it, its not as if everyone can say they have never had the odd O.T.T joke.
Joe, Street,
It is their job to be silly.
BBC is to blame, not the .. "talents".
Sueco, London, UK
It would never happen on radio 1 ;-)
James B, Leeds, England
Get over it people!! What a waste of time and energy.
If the old man was worried he'd have complained himself. Until that happens, what's the problem?
Dan, London,
Having actually slept with Russell Brand, Sachs granddaughter may have hoped for even a smidgen of this publicity! It is not their fault (RB, JR) this was aired and there was only 4 actual complaints from those who actually listened to the show. What utter nonense calling for them to be sacked!
Tony, Midlands,
Too PC
Sachs was to appear on the show, where if he had turned up would have been subject to such banter.
Sachs made his name in fawlty towers a show full of cheap jibs.
It wasnt live, the producer vetted it and broadcast, this is their job, Ross & Brand are paid to be themselves.
Condor, ballymena, n ireland
all blown absolutely out of proportion! russ continues to make me laugh, i bet half the people who've been whining havent even listened to the joke in context on the show, where it was actually quite funny.
before this hullabaloo, only two complaints had been made about the show...neither by sachs!
amy, Leeds,
The BBC need to treat Brand and Ross as the heroes they are. What they said was very funny.
There is too much political correctness in this country now.
Genius needs to be allowed
Neil Lithgo, Walthamstow, London, UK
Ryan, yes, there is freedom of speech, but it should, in such a public environment, be checked by decency. This incident certainly crossed the line. Furthermore, people cannot simply say anything they want on the BBC - that is why the shows are vetted. In this case, the vetting procedure failed.
Matt, UK,
This media feeding frenzy has just caused the best thing on TV to be suspended. This is a ridiculous over-reaction. Sometimes their comedy is a bit hit & miss and this time was a miss, but usually JR is the best thing on TV. Naysayers, if you don't like Ross & Brand, press that switch marked off!
Alan McCormack, Navan, Ireland
Ryan MK:
It's illegal to leave obscene messages (Prank calling) + it borders on libel...
And finally - who would dare insult such a genius...'Que?'
Paul Sullivan, Chester, UK
I found it funny anyway.
Dominic, Gillingham, Kent
The behaviour of Messrs. Ross and Brand is a reflection of our society. Majority of programs - chat shows, game shows, stand-up comedies and soaps - cater to the lowest denominator. If these two did not have an audience we would not be discussing them. Perhaps BBC should remove their platform.
Vinay Mehra, Purley, Surrey
Keny Everett must be laughing in his grave - nice one Kenny, you beat them all to it.,as always.
david devonport, Great Yarmouth, UK
I thought it was quite funny actually...
Chris, Guildford,
I like russel brand but he shouldnt be on before 9 oclock. Jothan ross is ok too just bad judgement i think on his part. I dont think license payers fees which i think is a tax should be paid in such ludicrous amounts to celbrities who appear on the bbc. this public sector abuse!! drop there wages
amit hindocha, birmingham, uk
The good news is that it's taken the heat off the financial crisis and has given us all something else to talk about for a few days!
Daniella, Surrey, UK
Linda the Lawyer is right as far as Miss Baillie is concerned it is 'Tortoise Libel' and this has nothing to do with the sexual position Mr. Brand was describing involving an item of living room furniture .
tony , worthing ,
The producer, or whoever had the final say on broadcasting this should certainly be seriously reprimanded, but the real sad and sick thing about this story is the bandwagon jumping mob baying for Ross and Brand's blood, like we the public are so faultless and sensitive to others feelings
Adam, Nottingham, UK
Really.... everyone. Grow up. it went to far. oops. slap the wrists and move on.
Get off the band wagon.
Long live Ross.
Andy Hine, Bolton,
Really Linda? I think Daniel W has absolutely nailed it. This is pointless news, although it has taken the heat of the ruddy credit crunch for a day.
I dont think this girl has a leg to stand on when she refers to herself as a 'satanic slut'.
John Tonner - live in the now mate.
David, London, uk
I have never liked British Humor...
That still holds true today.
Eric Tedford, Chittenango, NY, USA
Yeah, Brand and Woss are so sorry for what happened, .so sorry in fact that they will probably soon go on holiday to tropical climes with their families during this inquiry, and later will be offered lucrative Worldwide, Film, TV., Magazine, Newspaper ops, book deals etc as a reward!
John, Tove , United Kingdom
Hmmm, I must have been in asleep when Brand was rebuked for coming ahsore to my country and insulting our leadership, along with me and anyone else in support. But Brand noticed there was no rebuke, and instead saw the door wide open. Careful what you DON'T ask for, you'll get that, too.
Reginald Thornton, Atlanta, USA
Absolutely ridiculous. There is no reason this has been headline news for the last 4 days +. It's utterly pathetic. Yes it was bad taste, but both have apologised. A complete media witch hunt. Report on something more serious BBC.
Sarah , London, UK
What else do you expect from this pair of long-haired 'juveniles'? Their childish view on life is the very thing that makes them so endearing to the public...
Hasn't this been blown out of proportion?
Philip McGovern, Strabane, Tyrone
Fact - it was actually quite funny.
Fact - it was just a prank that went a bit too far.
Fact - Sachs happily made a career out of ridiculing an entire nation with his performance of Manuel, the bumbling, incompetent Spaniard.
I say, get over it.
Daniel W, London,
the pair of them should be sacked
I do hope she is going to sue the pair of them
as she does have a case in Tort
Linda, Preston, Lancashire
Is this really news?
Should the Prime Minister not have more pressing matters to deal with?
Such coverage only brings it to the attention of people who would otherwise be oblivious, or at least complaining about something else.
I think they're both great - if you dont like it, don't listen.
Lisa, Edinburgh,
They should be suspended and not reinstated as I am sure a high percentage of BBC viewers and listeners would agree
Graham Roberts, Ulverston, Cumbria
What kind of idiot is sticking up for these fools? Oh you'll miss their programmes? big deal. What kind of society say's it's ok to abuse old people for laddish, neanderthal entertainment?. No Jonathan Ross on a Friday night?. He's hardly Oscar Wilde!
john tonner, Uddingston,
Long live Jonathan Ross!!!!!
Natalie Brown, bradford, england
I think what they did was wrong and they should apologise, however I also think this has been blown out of proportion. Everyone needs to calm down, accept that they made a mistake and carry on, there are more important things to be worrying about!!
Kelly, Anglesey, North Wales
It's very telling that such 'luminaries' as piers morgan, kelvin mckenzie and alistair campbell have spoken out against RB and JR (ie jumped on the bandwagon). A greater bunch of objectionable, obnoxious halfwits I could not think. Whose side would you rather be on?
steve, watford, UK
I can't believe the level of ridiculousness this has reached. It was a bit cringeworthy, but so is almost all of Ross' and Brands comedy, thats what makes it entertaining. So it was taken a bit too far, they are obviously sorry for it. But seriously? All of this. incl. the PM and Cameron.
Mental.
Chris, Bristol,
To all of you who think that this is an over reaction, what would you do to a friend who rang up your grandfather and left an obscene message? Think about it please he is somebodies grandfather.
Geoff, Newcastle,
They should be fired and never hired. Disgraceful! They earn so much yet they prance around like little kids with huge arrogance! Foul mouthed, uncultured and yet they can earn a living! Disgraceful! Strike them down as a lesson!
James Cole, London, UK
How about replacing Jonathan Ross Friday night show with re-runs of fawlty towers.
The royalties paid to Mr Sachs should surely compensate him financially for the inconvenience due to the royalties. Or replay one of the many dross voice over documentaries he has done.
Or get a sense of humour
Dan Goodall, South Shields, england
A mistake was made and Ross and Brand should apologise and get told off. I think that a lot of people are just jumping on the bandwagon though. There were only 2 complaints after the show had been aired. The media has whipped people up into a frenzy and people are complaining on hearsay.
Dorethy, Staffs, UK
They both probably realised at the time their actions were not acceptable but continued to do so for a cheap laugh.
I just wonder how Jonathon Ross would react if he got similar phone messages involving members of his own family.
Charlene, irvine , britain
All this fuss about what, these two have been doing this kind of humour for years.. Blame the audience.. not these two jokers.. Secondly yes its tasteless but hey there is something called freedom of speech, how can any one suppress that..
Ryan, milton keynes, UK
I hope that this completely inane pair are vanished forever..will somebody pease tell me where their talents are supposed to lie, or have the events of the past few days revealed this all too clearly? I hope that prosecution follows swiftly, and if there is any justice they'll disappear.
Jackie, Blackburn, Lancashire
i think this has been blown out of all proportion thanks to the Sunday mail a paper that never makes comments that are out of line
funny how they weren't suspended till after Ross had presented film 2008 last night covering 40 min of Quantum
of Solace
simon dowker, kendal,
Howard Stern is having a contest. Who wants to be the next Howard Stern? Perhaps these two should try out since they appear to be wannabe outrageous DJs.
Jeff, Sacramento, California, USA
In all honesty - does anyone really care??!
There's are much much more important things happening in the world than this nonsense... Politicians should stick to politics instead jumping on the latest media frezy for publicity...
David, Northampton, UK
They should be fired immediately and made to pay substantial damages to Mr. Sachs.
Also, a proper apology wouldn't go amiss.
Shame on them, if they have any shame that is.
Hereward, Copenhagen, Denmark
It's surprising that the BBC gave Russell Brand airtime in the first place considering his normal behaviour is anything but normal. Why, when there is an abundance of real talent out there? As for Jonathan Ross, what a role model for his children to admire and aspire to, how embarrasing for them.
Susan Walker, Leeds, England
The BBC lost the plot years ago. It's run by politically-biased cretins who seem to think that paying moronic & deluded presenters (mainly on Radios 2 & 4) vast sums of money is what the public wants. No it is not. Maybe those cretins will now sit up & listen after this Ross and Brand incident.
Anne, Oxon,
Jonathan Ross is much more talented than Michael Barrymore and he nearly succeeded in returning to main screen television.. Ross will not be damaged in anyway by this, there is FAR too much money involved, and, Hey, money talks every language, doesn't it?
Graham , Littlehampton,
This has been blown way out of proportion by people who have jumped on a bandwagon to complain about the bbc. Whilst not condoning the action of Brand and Ross- I feel that the blame should be equally leveled at the people who allowed that segment to air. They've said sorry, just end it now.
Robert Cook, Newcastle,
I was brought up to respect my elders. Surely its obvious to most of the civilised world that elderly people are not likely to find this humour funny. Whilst its fine for my age group to have a pop at "your mum" it's most certainly not acceptable to my Granny. Grow up potty mouths!
Jules, Bristol, UK
I'm sorry, but I found it quite funny. Noteably ..... noone has denied the act at the core of the broadcast or threatened to take action on that particular basis.
Garry Latimer, Edinburgh, Sciotland
Ross and Brand have to use offensive words because they have no real talent. Andrew Sachs is a real talent and, I would suggest, will be remembered long after these two twits and their BBC allies are forgotten or missed.
They and the people responsible for this outrage should be dismissed.
John Perkins, Evesham, England
this is a waste of my license fee! the only thing i listen to on the bbc is russell brand, people harp on about 'their license fee', how many of you actually listen to these two guys regularly? this is a farce, the bbc has shot itself in the foot by doing this, and is 2million listeners unpopular?
Andrew, Manchester,
it's a joke can we people not take any jokes these days!!
phill cameron, glasgow, scotland
Dear BBC, why oh why?
Get a grip everyone, it seems a lot of fuss over nothing. This matter would have been forgotten and Andrew Sach, and his grand daughtersblushs would have been spared. Mind you, she is involved in a group called the Satanic Sluts so she can't be that embarrassed can she?
John J, Toronto,
Oh PLEASE! .. 18,000 complaints since broadcast ... how many 24hrs after broadcast ? 2 ! ... the 17,998 are all Mail readers getting all highly idignated.
The BBCs mission statement is to educate, inform and entertain.
Well I found it funny, so I'm entertained, job done. end of. next?
Mark, Clacton, Essex
While I haven't heared the programme I very much doubt that all of those who complained have either and have "jumped on the bandwagon".
I do not condone the show but haven't heared it so cannot complain either. I think there may be many "sheep" complaining!!
lewis, Swansea,
Don't worry celebs thrive on this they will be earning even more soon. Kate Moss gets caught doing coke.Everyone left her for 5 minutes and then fell over themselves to use her. The public are really to blame for letting these people succeed.
We are are the fools not Brand and Ross.
Dully, London, UK
I shall be delighted if I do not see or hear from either Brand or Ross on the BBC again, should they have a broadcasting future please let it be elsewhere. Their immediate supervisor should follow them.
Terry Williamson, Treorchy, UK
I for one will be more upset if I dont get my fix of Woss on friday! Yes, it was in bad taste, Yes, they should say sorry, but should the prime minister and his gang really get involved? did the 10,000 Mary Whitehouse types actually hear the original broadcast? or is this a media led witch hunt!
Basil Bell, Bath,
Come on everyone, lets blame those highly paid people and watch them fall from grace, or maybe we could ask ourselves, what about the members of the editorial team who were also been part of the decision to broadcast the recording?
Jonathon Ross is paid to shock us! Its his job.
David , Hereford,
The problem with this is that Brand & Ross didn't keep their anonymity..."The Fonejacker" did.
Even so, 18,000 complaints, 60,000,000 Brits. The BBC knows this is not the end of their careers, so why lose them to rivals?
Dave, London, UK
Having listened to the show I do feel that while the behaviour of Brand and Ross was unnacceptable, this whole episode has been blown out of proportion. If the two really are guilty of harrasment then surely the police should be the ones investigating.
Chris, Nottingahm,
All these people make me sick jumping on the band wagon calling for them to be sacked.
The show was pre recorded and NOT live so WHY WAS IT NOT CUT BEFORE GOING ON AIR?
Who at the BBC thought that it was acceptable. Sack that person and not Ross n Brand
Pip, liverpool,
I believe that Ross and Brand did nothing wrong. We are a free nation. BBC is our strength. It must not be intimidated by anyone. Making political capital out of suppressing the BBC and free speech is bad for our country. We pay the BBC to stand up to bullies like the Prime Minister and OFCOM.
Z. Hussain, Rochdale, UK
Fact...the radio show was pre-recorded, not live. So, the BBC should step up and take some responsibility. Who was responsible at the BBC to listen to the show before it aired? Are they getting suspended?
Tammie, Georgia, USA
I feel that this story has been massively blown out of proportion. Had the presenters just apologised, and the producers edited out that part of the show, then nobody would know about this, and it wouldn't have taken over the media in such a way that even the PM has an opinion.
Sam , Doncaster,
Offensive it may be (to some), but does it really merit the vast amount of column inches that seem to be being devoted to this? Comment from the PM!!!! Good grief, this is not the most important thing happening in the country today. I`m not a fan but it seems that some "have it in" for Brand & Ross.
Jim, Herts,
Oh Please - Russel Brand & Jonathon Ross are controversial commedians anyway - the blame definately lies with the editor if anyone - but then again why are so many people outraged about this? Even Sachs is not that angry - its an excuse for his granddaughter to make a bit of fame&money for herself!
Natalie , chatham, uk
Seriously, anyone who listens to either Russell Brand or Jonathan Ross know what to expect? Surely the focus should be more on the editorial team who failed to pull the calls from the show? It WAS pre-recorded after all. I fail to see how regular listeners of the pair could be at all offended.
StevieB, West Malling, Kent
The point everybody seems to be missing is that this was a pre-recorded show. The majority of the blame has to lie with the team who choose the content to be broadcast. It is the norm to edit to remove distasteful content from all pre-recorded shows, why were Brand and Ross denied that safety net?
adam, London, UK
For god's sake, it was a prank that went a little too far.
If there is anyone at fault, it's the public for accepting plummeting social standards and so much other rubish from the media that it makes it impossible for the BBC to know which pieces of sewage should be aired or not!!
Alex, Leicester, UK
& they have long hair
Disgraceful!
Jeremy Taylor, Gatwick, UK
It says that they received 18,000 complaints, but what it doesn't mention is that at the original time of airing it only received about 9 complaints - evidently the listeners of the show were not that scandalised, it was only afterwards that everyone started jumping on the complaints bandwagon!
Emma Fielding, Durham, Durham
Suspended? Not Sacked? I know what would happen to me if I have done this in my work place... BBC lives in a pararell universe.
Sang, London,
artists and presenters are normaly paid according to their popularity.
at the moment these two are no longer popular, so should be paid accordingly. nothing!
gordon, leyburn, yorks
Whilst I do not agree with the behaviour of both Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross , I feel most strongly that the blame should be apportioned to the hierarchy at the BBC and that they should admit to not carrying out their responsibilities in providing a service to the public
Angry from Radlett
penny, Radlett, Herts
Has the 'senior executive' also been suspended???
Peter Tutt, Toronto, canada
Some people fortunate enough to be in positions which benefit them financially way above that of the average person all too often have dilutions of grandeur and believe themselves "untouchable" it's about time the Law and the Authorities applied the same laws and regulations we all have to live by.
john, south shields, UK
Suspended! By what........ Something that hopefully will impact on their ability to reproduce !
DickW, Aberdeenshire,
Sums up the BBC this.Frightened to death of taking any real action.Ross and Brand must be laughing all the way to the bank.I can guarantee you that they will use this incident in future material and think it's funny.
Chapman, Cheshire, England
