Austin Powers 2 (1999)
Sky Premiere, 8pm
The second hugely successful spy spoof from the comedian Mike Myers and the director Jay Roach is little more than a series of slapstick sketches and novelty cameos, but the movie in-jokes and laboured double entendres come thick and fast. Myers once again plays multiple roles as the toothy secret agent and his nemesis, Doctor Evil. Heather Graham co-stars as Austin’s sexy new sidekick, blasted into space to infiltrate Evil’s new lair. Verne Troyer makes his Mini-Me debut while Elizabeth Hurley, Rob Lowe, Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello all drop by, tongues firmly in cheeks. (95min)
Vanilla Sky (2001)
More4, 9pm
Cameron Crowe’s stylish remake of the 1997 Spanish thriller Open Your Eyes stars Tom Cruise as a playboy tycoon who begins to realise that his perfect life might be some kind of nightmarish hallucination. Adventurous in style, if a little overblown and overlong, Crowe’s mind-bending meditation on youth, beauty and self-delusion remains true to the spirit of Alejandro Amenábar’s original. It even features the same co-star, Penélope Cruz, as Cruise’s lover. (135min)
Halloween II (1981)
BBC One, 12.30am
John Carpenter’s 1978 original invented the modern suburban slasher genre, inspiring countless copycats and helping to make Jamie Lee Curtis a star. The first of umpteen sequels, Halloween II reunites Curtis and Donald Pleasence and exposes some of the family skeletons behind the serial killer Michael Myers’s rampage of revenge. But otherwise, it is
a pretty lacklustre effort. Declining the chance to direct, Carpenter took a back seat to the novice Rick Rosenthal. The two later fell out when Carpenter decided that Rosenthal’s version was too tame and added some extra gory scenes. (92min)
