So the people have spoken . . . and they have been roundly ignored. Conspiracy theorists will never accept that John Sergeant's shock decision to quit Strictly Come Dancing was made simply because this humble political oracle believes winning the series would be “a joke too far”.
The judges could not contain their fury that viewers consistently chose to save the flat-footed broadcaster, who last Saturday came bottom of the score table for the third week in a row with dance partner Kristina Rihanoff.
Reports were already spreading that, faced with a revolt from Arlene Phillips and co, the voting system would be overhauled in next year’s series, to prevent the public substituting their preferences for those of the experts.
Faced with a viewer rebellion, Jay Hunt, the BBC One boss, wisely volunteered to explain the withdrawal in person to the media. She is under the impression that the corporation is producing a show to educate the nation in ballroom technique. Ten million viewers, on the other hand, enjoy seeing well-known faces falling on their backsides, making a mockery of the “pundits”.
Naturally, Sergeant and Kristina will appear one more time on Saturday night for a farewell foxtrot. The furore will no doubt lure viewers away from The X Factor. Because it’s really all about ratings, isn’t it?

they say this is all about the best dancers. The BBC should bring back 12 professional dancers and see what the viewimg figures will be. I believe this is a depiction of democracy at work in the UK.
irfan , london,
Ah, the glorious BBC. They can't trust the public to name a Blue Peter cat so why change now.
And the worst thing, the worst thing, is this is a charitable venture. Not only has John Sergeant raised a large amount of money but it is all going back. I"m sure Children in need are so proud.
Matt, Nottingham, United Kingdom
John was not guilty of staying while better dancers went. The losers were never going to win, and those that leave from now on won't have anyone to blame but themselves.
A sad day for the general public, I shan't vote again, I really don't care who wins now.
jill gladwin, chipping campden, england
Its appalling - we just have to learn to do what we are told and vote for who we are told to vote for!!!
I agree with Kelly - switch off.
Mark, Berkhamsted,
So the BBC cannot manipulate the viewers votes, so they allow the "Judges" to ridicule and bully a contestant, one that has been chosen by the public to remain in the show.
It's about time all so called "reality" shows were scrapped, the viewers votes count for nothing.
Kevin, Poole, UK
I too agree with Kelly and shall not watch SCD after JS's last appearance
Chris, Reading,
How will it lure viewers away from The X Factor when they are on at different times?
Chris, Switzerland,
This is absolutely appalling. People have paid to vote for what they wanted to see, and their votes have been overruled.
I agree with Kelly, the only vote we have now is to refuse to watch SCD, and I would urge everyone who voted for John to do the same! Ratings are opinions that will count!
Nicky, Buxton, UK
We know the likely winner from week one, yet improvement and personal best are equally important. If it.s all about being a "professional" dancer why bother inviting the outsiders who give us such wonderful entertainment. And why bother with an audience vote?
Margaret Barber, Wroxham, UK
Superb point Kelly - hear hear! I hope a significant number of people do the same! I certainly will!
Ryan, Hornchurch, England
It worked the other way - when various soap stars were kept ON the show by all their fans when on dancing ability they deserved to go! Or not to win the competition in one case!!
Paulene, Blantyre, Malawi
Actually, as a devoted supporter of SCD until this point, I will now be watching X Factor...actually, maybe I'll just switch the tv off!
Either way, since my opinion doesn't matter and the BBC can bend the rules to get the result they want, I will not be watching SCD any more. What's the point?
Kelly, Glasgow,
