The Goulash Archipelago
Radio 4, 11am
Putting aside the wisdom of basing the title of this jokey documentary on a classic tale of man’s inhumanity, there is much to enjoy in this two-part tale of travel and cooking. Here the British jazz bass player Arnie Somogyi and the Hungarian guitarist Zsolt Bende are in the Carpathian mountains between Hungary and Romania. For a week they are required to sing for their supper, and all the meals in between, or they will starve.
In the music-loving Carpathians that should not be too daunting a task, but Somogyi and Bende aren’t just there to play. They are also there to search for traditional recipes, as well as the necessary ingredients for Hungary’s chief contribution to the world’s table, goulash.
Friday Night Is Music Night
Radio 2, 7.30pm
The Brit School for Performing Arts and Technology has, for good or ill, given the world Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis, members of the Feeling and the Kooks, Katie Melua, Kate Nash and Adele — plus that stalwart of the youth-orientated TV programme, Dane Bowers.
So while you might not recognise — or even be able to see, this being radio — the school’s final-year musical theatre students tonight as they appear alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra, chances are that at least some of them will go on to become, if not household names, at least performers capable of getting regular work — something of a triumph in the entertainment field. They perform songs from the classics — Guys and Dolls, Oliver! and Oklahoma! — as well as more current hits such as Wicked, Hairspray and The Lion King.
