Woman's Hour Drama
Radio 4, 10.45am
Julian Fellowes, who won an Oscar for his script for Robert Altman's Gosford Park, was back in the world of country houses with his 2004 novel Snobs, adapted and narrated here by Nicholas Farrell. The plot is a bit Mills and Boon - titled chap marries beautiful petit bourgeois gell, beautiful gell endures miserable time and meets Another - but it's the incidental details that will keep you listening all week. The observation that being praised for having a beautiful skin means that the rest of the fizzog is a bit naff; the intelligence that you have to put your name down practically at birth for a space in the No 1 car park at Royal Ascot. And the cast isn't all that shabby either - Hugh Bonneville, Celia Imrie, Julian Rhind-Tutt to name but three.
The Things We Forgot to Remember
Radio 4, 8pm
The programme in which Michael Portillo prods our memories of past events begins a new four-part series with an analysis of the Jarrow March in 1936. It was the height of the Great Depression and Jarrow had been hit harder than most - after the shipyards closed, there was 80 per cent unemployment in the town. But Portillo doesn't want to talk about the Jarrow March - or rather he wants to compare it with the very different treatment meted out to those marchers, who were hailed as heroes, and the far better-attended “hunger marches” of the years after the First World War. Those marchers were vilified and, on one notorious occasion in 1932, attacked by mounted police. Why the discrepancy?
