The sad news yesterday about the death of Oliver Postgate, who created some fondly remembered shows for children's TV, was soon tempered by an impromptu Postgate film festival on Web Watcher's computers. Starting with some seasonal jollity from Ivor the Engine (tinyurl.com/5waf8h), recalling a time when sledging was a wholesome outdoor activity rather than a euphemism for cynical gamesmanship, the morning was rapidly written off as clips were discovered online and eagerly watched by an audience of nominally mature journalists.
It wasn't all silliness though. There was some hard politics too: after the final, elegiac episode of The Clangers - The Music of the Spheres (tinyurl.com/5adkta) - Postgate was tempted back to the world of knitted alien armadillos to make a short film for the 1974 election, a clip of which can still be found online at tinyurl.com/6kvsp9 .
Noggin the Nog looked basic, but such was the power of Postgate's storytelling, and the special tone of his voice, that this story of Noggin's run-in with his nemesis Nogbad the Bad can still captivate viewers more used to hyperkinetic toy adverts masquerading as programming. See it at tinyurl.com/57g6d8.
Pingwings took Postgate's signature stop-motion puppets outdoors. Adding in a judicious amount of live animal footage it's a show that still has the power to charm very young viewers almost half a century after it first aired. There's a fan site that offers a knit your own Pingwing pattern at tinyurl.com/6x8x9x.
Pogles' Wood (tinyurl.com/5k6kqa) was a particular success, managing to capture that elusively indefinable fairytale quality that one might expect to find only in traditional stories, but if Postgate were remembered for only one television programme it would surely be Bagpuss (tinyurl.com/69rdgg ). The loveable cloth cat told stories that temporarily suspended reality and brought another, more magical, world to life. A bit like his creator in fact.
