The BBC presenter Ed Stourton, “sacked” last week from his job on the flagship radio programme Today, has accused the corporation of double standards for allegedly treating him in a worse manner than Jonathan Ross.
Stourton, 51, said his dismissal from the Radio 4 news programme after 10 years’ “unblemished service” was in sharp contrast to Ross’s current suspension for making lewd telephone calls to the actor Andrew Sachs.
He only learnt of his demise on being called for comment by another journalist. His editor later confirmed the rumour.
Stourton, nicknamed “Posh Ed” for his perfect diction, told The Mail on Sunday: “Some of my family have pointed out the contrast between what happened to Ross over his remarks and what happened to me for 10 years’ unblemished service to the BBC. He was suspended, I was sacked.”
The BBC has not given a reason for Stourton’s dismissal simply saying he is being released to work on “other projects”. But it comes weeks after he referred to the late Queen Mother as “a ghastly old bigot” in It’s a PC World, his book on political correctness.
Stourton is expected to continue presenting Today until next September when he will be replaced by the BBC’s North America editor Justin Webb.
Mark Damazer, controller of Radio 4, said : “Ed Stourton will continue to grace Radio 4 after he leaves Today. He is a distinguished journalist with a terrific track record in a host of Radio 4 programmes.”
Ross was given a three-month suspension by the BBC for his part in the “Manuelgate” scandal. The pre-recorded show also led to the resignation of Radio 2 controller Lesley Douglas and co-presenter Russell Brand.

It's business. Which had the larger audience and was more valueb by this debased BBC? We just bought the DVD set of BBC Shakeaspeare produced in 1978. Can you imagine the BBC producing that qualtiy today? They had have J Woss staring in it for sure

The spoken word on Radio either pleases the listeners ear or in most cases irritates. So. the B.B.C sacks one of it's best voices. Sadly, it's symptomatic of this country that we must dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator, and listener has to suffer. I despair of the B.B.C

So Stourton, one of the few people whom it is a pleasure to listen to and who is always courteous and intelligent, is to go while Ross, who is a crass, gabbling boor, is to stay. That tells you how the attitude of BBC management has degenerated - exemplified by the way it has 'let Stourton go'.
Julian, Salisbury,
I am surprised that Ed Stourton will be "moved" from the Today programme. Another excellent presenter lost to us! However, one tiny criticism might be that his voice tends to rise and then fall away a little too much, sometimes making it almost inaudible - frustratingly!
A shame for him, though.

I too had made the comparison between the treatment of Ed Stourton and Jonathan Ross - can you sack someone without good reason if there is still a vacancy.
I certainly am not posh but I love the voice of Posh Ed and I thought his quieter, cultured voice was a great contrast to John Humphries.
Sheila Reeves, Penzance,
I think the whole anti-pc movement is all about wanting to be free call a spade a spade, and suchlike, as it was in the 'good old days.' But when royalty is involved, PC rules! Although it is then referred to as 'decorum, appropriate behaviour, respect' etc.

What happened to freedom of speech and freedom of expression?
I'm shocked and quite saddened by the Beeb's actions; Ed's a great journalist and presenter of "Today"; knocks Evan Davis into a cocked hat.
I will miss his gorgeous voice whilst sipping my morning coffee.
