Chris Hoy, golden boy of Beijing, topped off a triumphant year for British cycling last night as he was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
The cyclist with the improbably chunky thighs won a landslide in the public poll, winning a total of 283,630 votes — almost 120,000 more than Formula One’s Lewis Hamilton and 140,000 more than the Olympic swimming sensation, Rebecca Adlington.
Hoy led a series of wins which left no doubt that, at the end of a superlative year for British sport, it was the cyclists who reigned supreme.
British Cycling was voted Team of the Year and Dave Brailsford, the performance director behind this year’s haul of 14 medals, including eight golds, won Coach of the Year.
It was still something of a surprise victory for the quiet man from Edinburgh. He may have been the first Briton in a century to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games, but until yesterday, bookmakers still had Hoy trailing in third place, behind Hamilton and Adlington.
This was the second time that Hamilton, an early favourite for the award, has missed out.
“I really didn’t expect this,” said an emotional Hoy, 32, as he received a standing ovation from 9,000 spectators in the Liverpool Echo Arena. He seemed almost overwhelmed after accepting the award from Sir Steve Redgrave, the Olympic rower, and Michael Johnson, the US sprinter.
“British sport has enjoyed its best year, certainly in my lifetime,” he said. “After the year I’ve had and the whole team has had, to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year, it just means so much. This is the big one and this is just unbelievable.
“The first person, or the first group of people I have to thank are the public who voted for me because I’m just overwhelmed.”
Hoy, nicknamed “Hoycules” and – somewhat less imaginatively – “The Real McHoy”, is the first cyclist to win the award since Tommy Simpson in 1965.Adlington said: “It was as good as a vote for Team GB. Chris is the unofficial captain of Team GB and this was the last hurrah. There could be no better winner than Chris.”
In second place, Hamilton polled 163,864, followed by Adlington with 145,924, the sailor Ben Ainslie 35,472, the boxer Joe Calzaghe 34,077, the tennis player Andy Murray 19,415, the cyclist Nicole Cooke 18,256, the athlete Christine Ohurougu 7,677, and the cyclists Bradley Wiggins 5,633. and Rebecca Romero 4,526.
Viewers clearly wanted to reward Team GB, and not just the giants of sport but also Eleanor Simmonds, 14. Britain’s youngest Olympic victor won two golds in the pool at a glorious Paralympic Games for Team GB in Beijing, and last night she became BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year.
“I only came to have fun and meet some famous people, like Lewis Hamilton,” she said as she clutched her gleaming silver award.

Jon D - In congratulating C. Hoy, one does not have to denigrate another nominee. It actually brings a spirit of meaness to the process. I am sure Hoy will now be able to capatilize on his fame and earn some money. No need to begrudge Hamilton for making a living at his sport.
M. Taylor, Brampton, ON
I should have said Jon D should have taken his cue from Ian, Clare and Julio in their congratulatory messages. Very pleasant and objective.

Chris was a great leader in China. 3Golds from one guy. Well done the Flying Scot.
Ian M, Abernethy, Scotland
Finally some media recognition for the achievements of our cyclists. Chris Hoy is a deserving winner with a huge number of records, medals and achievements to his name, and a nice bloke to boot. And anyone who paid attention to the Olympics would recognise him.
Clare, Exeter, UK
I think Chris Hoy is a Sports Personality now. What are a nice guy who showed so much chram and humilty. Sorry for Lewis and Rebecca as either would have been a worthy winner. How good we have three strong candidates. The victory last year of that boxer no-one had ever heard of was terrible.
Julio S, Mexico City, Mexico
Chris is a great athelete.
Not a great sports personality.
richard block, London, UK
"His UK Sport grant is a mere £24,000; compare that with the £20million salary being paid to Lewis Hamilton, Formula One's world champion, by McLaren Mercedes." From another part of the paper.
Rather puts it into perspective. I'd recognise Hoy in the street, but I wouldn't recognise Hamilton.
Jon D, Gloucestershire, UK
I would recognise him in the street. Would you recognise any of the others ? Most sportsmen look like anyone else in the street when out of their sporting kit. What a rediculous argument ! Hoy is an amazing athlete and deserved to win. I congratulate him !
Adrian, Leomisster, UK
Adrian - What a ridiculous comment (1) the public voted for SPOTY, thats why CH won, not because of block voting; (2) What Brailsford, Hoy, Boardman et al have achieved for British cycling is unprecedented in terms of success; (3) anyone with an interest in British sport would recognise Hoy.
Mike, London,
Who would recognise him on the street? What were you doing over the Summer? Watching more football on TV?
I appreciate the title, "sports personality", is a little misleading - but it is for sporting endeavour & success, not whether you have appeared in Hello magazine or launched your own fragrance
Ian, Manchester,
I am pleased he won. I had to do some research to learn about his achievements but that makes this award even more deserving. Hamilton gets paid millions for his efforts -I am sure Hoy does not. Well done.
Tony Pereira, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia
The B.B.C. have always always had a policy of not accepting block votes from special interest groups. Now this. Chris Hoy deserved to win, but who would recognize him in the street?
