Money Can't Buy You Class
Radio 4, 11am
Solihull, to the southeast of Birmingham, was once called the Mayfair of the Midlands, a place of tree-lined streets and large houses occupied by the very wealthy - or, as it's put in Stuart Jeffries's documentary, a place of “old money and crooks”. But that has changed over the past few years, with an influx of hardworking, honest people whose big ideas have born big fruit, and who seek a lifestyle commensurate with their good fortune. Jeffries speaks to three of them, and finds them both proud of their achievements and uneasy about their social position. One can't bring himself to describe himself as middle-class, opting for “upper working class”; another thinks that, having put his own children through private education, he can send them out into the world without the padding of his money, just as he once did. Good luck. It's odd that the credit crunch appears to have had no affect on them - perhaps, between recording and broadcast, it has.
Online Damage: Porn in the 21st Century
Radio 4, 8pm
These days hardcore and violent porn are routinely available in the home through the worldwide web - with occasionally devastating effects on children (a recent survey suggested that 90 per cent of 8-to- 16-year-olds had accessed porn online) and adult relationships. Here Penny Marshall talks to those who use and provide online porn and those trying to do something to curb its influence.
On the Hour
Radio 7, 11.30pm
Worth waiting up for - the first (of five) episode from the first series that gave the world the edgy genius of Christopher Morris and the rather more commercially friendly genius of Steve Coogan as the world's worst sports reporter Alan Partridge.
