This double Oscar-winning re-creation of the D-Day landings is an all-star epic made using four directors and considerable amounts of the producer Darryl Zanuck’s money. Sean Connery, then a virtual unknown, appears alongside John Wayne, Richard Burton, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Robert Wagner and the real- life D-Day veteran Richard Todd. Sluggish drama, but what a cast. (180min)
xXx (2002)
Five, 9pm
Vin Diesel makes his blockbuster debut as a pumped-up James Bond for the PlayStation generation in Rob Cohen’s infuriatingly dumb action caper. Sent to Prague to bring down a terrorist godfather (Marton Csokas), Diesel’s delinquent super-agent snowboards down avalanches, fires rockets from a souped-up car and beds the bad guy’s beautiful girlfriend (Asia Argento). A gigantic slab of absurd machismo. (124min)
JFK (1991)
BBC One, 10.55pm
Much more ambitious and controversial than his new film World Trade Center, Oliver Stone’s powerhouse essay on the mother of all conspiracy theories still feels like a bravura piece of film-making. It is packed with star names and the virtuoso editing blends newsreel footage, dramatic re-creation and wild speculation. Kevin Costner is excellent as the New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison, the only man to try legally to prove a Kennedy assassination plot. (189min)

BILLY MADISON (1995)
Film4, 9pm
Adam Sandler had not quite hit his infantile stride when he made this mildly amusing farce about a spoilt rich kid who must retake his school exams in record time to inherit his father’s hotel empire. The film pays lip service to the power of love and education, but this is largely a smokescreen for Sandler’s usual goofball clowning. (89min)
THE KRAYS (1990)
ITV4, 10pm
The former Spandau Ballet members Martin and Gary Kemp surprised many with their excellent portrayal of Ronnie and Reggie Kray, the sadistic twins who ruled postwar London gangland. Peter Medak’s biopic is engaging, but lacks a certain bite. (119min)
SAY ANYTHING (1989)
Film4, 10.40pm
The clumsy, gawky protagonists of Cameron Crowe’s minor teen-pic classic feel a little more real than their Brat Pack contemporaries. A fresh- faced John Cusack plays a keen kickboxing student who becomes involved with Ione Skye’s bookish heroine. Warmhearted slush. (100min)
