Jeremy Clarkson has sparked complaints after joking about a German invasion of Poland on Sunday night’s series finale of Top Gear.
The BBC and media watchdog Ofcom have both been approached by viewers after the controversial presenter filmed a spoof advert for the German-made Volkswagen Scirocco TDI.
The clip showed people in Warsaw panicking and rushing to board trains and buses as a mass exodus gripped the city.
It ended with the line “Volkswagen Scirocco TDI. Berlin to Warsaw in one tank.”
After the clip was posted on the video sharing website YouTube, Poles used the comments field to angrily criticise Clarkson’s reference to the Second World War.
“I’m going to kick this prick's arse,” declared one, while another dismissed it as “typical English shit”.
But Clarkson was supported by other YouTube users who encouraged viewers to see it as a joke.
“I laughed at it and people should have a better sense of humour,” said Bakermistrzu.
A spokeswoman for the BBC Two show said it had only received a handful of complaints but Ofcom figures, expected to be higher, will be released tomorrow as part of the watchdog’s weekly report.
Clarkson landed the BBC in trouble with German diplomats in 2005, when he gave a Nazi salute on Top Gear while discussing a new version of the German-made Mini.
After saying that the Mini’s indicators should go up and down, and demonstrating with the salute, he went on to joke that the car might have a GPS system “that only goes to Poland”.
Clarkson made headlines again last month after telling a live Top Gear audience off-air that Gordon Brown was a “c***”.
Earlier in the year he apologised after calling the Prime Minister a “one-eyed Scottish idiot”.
One of the most controversial figures on television, Clarkson has frequently railed against attempts to blunt his and other presenter’s humour.
He has also complained that since Radio 2 presenters Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand’s infamous telephone call to Andrew Sachs, the media environment has become suffocating.
Writing in The Sunday Times last year, he said: “In the current climate it is no longer possible to express an opinion on TV because you are bound to upset a pressure group that then runs around waving its arms in the air and calling for you to be sacked or shot or turned into a hat.”
The next series of Top Gear begins in November.
