Her chocolates were overpriced and Sir Alan Sugar was turned off by her ten-year career plan, but The Apprentice runner-up Kate Walsh was named today as host of a new news magazine show on Channel 5.
The 27-year-old will be joined by former Arsenal and England footballer Ian Wright and former Page Three girl Melinda Messenger to present Live From Studio Five, a nightly hour-long programme discussing the news, sport and entertainment.
Five said the hosts had been chosen for their forthright opinions and said viewers could expect to be “entertained, informed, surprised and occasionally shocked”.
The show will go on air in September, most likely in the 6.30pm slot, and will feature a mix of location reports, celebrity interviews, gossip and conversation around events in the news agenda of the day.
Walsh said she was excited by the prospect of working on the show.
“Becoming part of the presenting team on the new show is an exhilarating and thrilling challenge - and I love a challenge! I can’t wait to get stuck in to daily live TV, and the show promises to be a totally new way of reviewing the day’s news,” she said.
Wright quit his role as a football pundit at the BBC last year, saying the corporation’s coverage was too stuffy and out of touch with fans.
He also said he was tired of being used as a “comedy jester” between regular pundits Alan Hansen and Alan Shearer.
The 45-year-old co-hosted the comeback series of Gladiators with Kirsty Gallacher on Sky One.
He said the new Five show promised to be “high energy, fast-paced and a great laugh”.
Richard Woolfe, channel controller at Five, said: “This is news - but not as you know it. It’s a chatty, forthright spirited magazine.
“For the first time on British TV, presenters will be passionately discussing news events and expressing their no-holds-barred opinions in a way that reflects the way we all interact and react to the biggest stories of the day.
“Every other broadcaster’s schedule at this time is totally predictable and I believe there’s a huge opportunity for a show like this which will shake things up, put Five on the map and get viewers talking about the channel.”
