The Director General of the BBC claimed 63 times on his expenses for parking meter charges as low as 70 pence, according to figures published by the corporation today.
Mark Thompson’s claims, which also include a night at the Bellagio in Las Vegas for £647.50, form part of a £170,000 bill for work-related expenses submitted by the BBC’s highest paid managers in just three months.
The detailed disclosures will be embarrassing for Mr Thompson whose annual remuneration totals £834,000.
Among his fellow executives Andy Parfitt, the controller of Radio 1, claimed £540 for clothing to take part in a charity climb for Comic Relief, while Caroline Thomson, who handles BBC negotiations with the Government, spent more than £4,000 on taxis in the three-month period.
Almost 3,000 claims are detailed in documents published on the BBC website today. The expenditure by staff, all of whom earn over £150,000 per year, includes £30,314 on hospitality, £46,110 on taxis, £50,375 on flights and £16,678 on hotels.
The 107 managers, who take home around £20 million a year in pay, have also had their exact salaries and remunerations published on the corporation’s website for the first time.
Other claims included:
- Alan Yentob, Creative Director: Flight London to New York, £3,211.70.
- Roger Wright, Controller Radio 3: Lunch with Simon Heffer, including taxis: £120.
- Roland Keating, Director of Archive Content: Hilton Hotel, Long Beach, California: £1,010.83
- Jay Hunt, Controller, BBC One: Bottle of spirits: £29.74
Ms Thomson, who oversees negotiations on the BBC Charter, charged 122 taxi journeys to the BBC in three months. The chief operating officer, whose father was a Labour minister, commands a remuneration package of £413,000. She is expected to be heavily involved in negotiations over the licence fee if a hostile Conservative Party is elected next year.
