A timber and glass “street” designed by the architect Frank Gehry is to be installed in Hyde Park, Central London.
The structure, which will open in July, comprises large timber planks and multiple glass planes set at different angles. It is the ninth in a series of temporary summer buildings commissioned by the Serpentine Gallery.
Gehry, 79, is most famous for the titanium-clad curved walls of the Guggenheim museum, which opened in Bilbao in 1997. The Canadian-born architect, now based in the US, has never had a structure built in England before. He said: “The pavilion is designed as a wooden timber structure that acts as an urban street running from the park to the existing gallery. Inside the pavilion, glass canopies are hung from the wooden structure to protect the interior from wind and rain and provide for shade during sunny days.
“The pavilion is much like an amphitheatre, designed to serve as a place for live events, music, performance, discussion and debate.”
Gehry has designed seating on either side of the structure and five elevated pods, which can be used as stages, viewing platforms and dining areas. Since 2000 the Serpentine has commissioned a structure that serves as a venue for a café, evening talks and events. Previous architects include Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind.

Not impressed.
The ends of the multiple beams are exposed to the elements and I expect rot and fungal infestations to set in soon.
If it works as an enclosed space and lasts for 30 years without massive restoration then, OK.
Otherwise demolish it and start again.
