Built in the 1960s, this busy covered marketplace is the hub of the 800-year-old rural market town, and is proud of its history. With around 25 traders selling everything from antiques to cheese, second-hand books, babywear and toys, the hall is a thriving centre for traders — if only more buyers would visit.
The answer to increasing the footfall, according to Mike Coppock, who nominated Powis Hall, is a revamp to breathe new life into the dilapidated building and draw more visitors.
The hall is “dismal”, says Mike, who sells fair trade bags and jewellery at one stall, and has just branched into free-range eggs and chutneys on another. “People just don’t like coming in. There’s no natural light, the plain concrete floors make it drab and dark,” he says. “There’s a real selection because of the number of independent traders, but people won’t come in because of the building.”
With a high ceiling and balcony in a large space, Coppock feels that the hall has enormous potential that could be opened up and made more welcoming with limited changes. His bid is finding huge local support, not least with the council, which owns the hall.
Gail Holloway, the city services officer, agrees that it is drab and in need of an update. However, although it is a council-owned building, she says their budget does not allow the authority to do it up. “Our budget has been cut and there simply isn’t enough money to titivate buildings, but it’s a shame and it could do with a boost, as it would boost the morale of traders and trade.”
Terence Conran: I love markets. Markets changed my ideas about design after a friend and I drove right the way through France, hopping from one vibrant, colourful market to the next. I would want to bring colour and light to Powis Hall to create a good atmosphere.
Tara Bernerd: This represents an exciting project. It’s a place of great energy in a very dismal setting. Lighting, joinery, colour and intelligent cladding work would make an enormous difference.
