More than 3,000 people slept rough in London last year. The lucky few will be rescued by Rushworth Street centre, a shelter run by St Mungo’s charity. It provides 30 beds for men and women who have lived rough on the streets and aims to rehabilitate them, provide them with benefits and look after their mental and physical healthcare needs.
Robinder Chahal has managed the shelter for two years. Rushworth Street was nominated by a stranger, but she is hoping that the centre’s 6m by 3m television room, which overlooks a patio garden, will be the focus for a potential Conran/Bernerd makeover.
“The dynamic of the building is always changing because the people are always changing,” Chahal says. “They can drink on the premises, but instead of sitting around drinking all day, we’d like the room to become a space for people to deal with their emotions. It’s about managing difficult behaviour. When we get the Wii out, they stop drinking and start talking.”
Terence Conran: This place is already a sanctuary for the people who use it, but it would be good to create a happy atmosphere where people can go to relax and have a good night’s sleep.
Tara Bernerd: There is no doubt that this is an important cause and needs attention to space planning and understanding of its demands, allowing this space to be as functional and comfortable as possible.
