Scartho houses a thriving centre of learning that is integral to village life in Grimsby. The tightly-knit community is rallying round the efforts of the manager, Julie Salt, and Head of Community Learning Services, Susan Simpson, to have its value to the local area recognised. For 80 years the centre has been dedicated to encouraging adult learning — around 300 people use it for IT, language, art, craft and even pre-teacher training classes.

“It has character, there’s no doubt about it, and we don’t want to lose that,” Salt says. “But it hasn’t been well maintained. We want to continue to provide a positive learning environment.”

On the wish-list of the students is a revamp of kitchen and communal areas, for the garden to be spruced up so that they have a place to relax between classes, and the installation of air conditioning. An update of fixtures such as the metal windows would also help to modernise it.

Terence Conran: You'd have to be very adult to learn anything in there! Places of learning need to be inspiring, colourful and cheerful.

Tara Bernerd: From the exterior the building looks unwelcoming and from the word go, unapproachable. This clearly needs to be considered.
