Warndon Community Centre has become more significant to the local community since the recession started to hit pockets hard. Its bleak exterior houses a meeting point for the jobless, those who want to become more involved with the community or need access to health and other services.
David Geman, who visits regularly, nominated it because he felt that the warmth of the people needed to be reflected in the centre: “The first sight people have of our community centre is this cold building, but inside you’re given a warm welcome.”
Anne Whitcombe, 53, is the manager. “The people we see here have often been referred by their doctors,” she says. “We help them to get fit, give up smoking and we even support those with breathing difficulties through a joint-initiative with the NHS.”
The pre-fab community centre also offers play schemes in school holidays, a youth club, bingo and even facilities for the children of travellers who are passing through the area. Staff and users would like to see a sleeker interior with a roomier feel, especially in the café area.
Terence Conran: This just looks like a collection of industrial sheds. It’s clearly a good size and we could certainly make something of it, adding colour and vibrancy.
Tara Bernerd: It seems to have a bleak façade and I am sure we will discover a neglected space inside that would benefit from improvement.
