Ronald and Libby Kitt have been visiting Victoria Park in Liverpool for over 40 years, but now despair at the dilapidated condition of the once-grand pavilion that formed its centrepiece.
Victoria Park itself is believed to have been constructed at the turn of the last century and has facilities for tennis, football and bowling sprinkled throughout a beautiful wooded area. However its two-room pavilion has suffered the ravages of time.
“I would like nothing better than to see it restored to its former glory,” says Ronald, 68. “It’s actually a beautiful structure, with an open front and V-shaped gable but it’s become a target for vandals since it’s been unmanned for so many years.”
The Kitts would like to see the beauty of the original architecture to be on display once more and for it to continue to be used as a meeting point. A fundraising group, Friends of Victoria Park, believes that if restored the pavilion would be used by the whole community.
Terence Conran: I can see potential here — parks are an automatic focal point for the community so it’s a good location and it wouldn’t be hard to add cheer and warmth. A café might do well, and maybe a showcase for local arts?
Tara Bernerd: This central pavilion is completely out of date and slightly depressing. A new specification would make a considerable difference.
