“Some years ago, Reynaulds Cross school had a flat for teenagers with special needs, aged 16 to 19, where they could learn to keep a home,” says Richard Sutton, the deputy head. “But we only had 50 children at that time. Now we have 92 aged 2 to 19, so all non-essential space was swallowed up.”
Then 18 months ago, Reynaulds Cross saw the chance of restoring that halfway house between school and the outside world for their pupils when their caretaker left his house to move into another home. The three-bedroom house is owned by the council, which agreed to let it to the school for a small rent.
In return, the school agreed to do it up with the help of the children. This would give them work experience in painting and decorating, as well as help them use the house to learn the skills to prepare them for life outside the school.
“What we’d like is for it to be kept as a house, but to explore different living environments,” Sutton says. “It would encourage our young people to be more independent. We have the workpower, we just need the expertise to move forward.”
Terence Conran: Well this certainly looks like it needs a bit of work. We’d choose some good colours, floor coverings and curtain materials. And shelving for all the materials they need.
Tara Bernerd: This just shouts out for help. The place is incredibly neglected. It would benefit from a total overhaul to include new flooring, wall treatments, lighting and furniture.
