Opened last year, the workshop is designed to be a “community catalyst”, where people from all walks of life can meet and be creative together — whether they be unemployed young men and women seeking training in woodwork, screen-printing or jewellery, or pensioners. Its aim is to encourage the locals of Leeds to start up creative businesses, to acquire new skills and have access to machinery that would not normally be available to them.

According to Laura Wellington, who helps to run the workshop, they have the equipment, but the building is not conducive to creativity: “We want it to become an inspiring place where people want to come and be creative together.”

Terence Conran: We would introduce colour and get rid of the fluorescent lighting here.

Tara Bernerd: New lighting and zoning is required! Creating zones for each different use is key. The space would lend itself very well to colour treatments, signage and feature storage walls.
