BRISTOL The graffiti artist Bansky’s earliest mural has been painted over by contractors in his home town.
The series of blue shapes on the side of garages, signed with the artist’s tag, was covered with black paint applied with rollers. Local residents saved another mural. Teams have been removing graffiti across Bristol as part of centrally funded neighbourhood renewal schemes, but the council, which is to hold an inquiry, said that contractors had been told not to remove the mural.

In all honesty blacking out this ' art ' is the best thing for it. Not only has it the least artistic merit of any genre, it is an abhorence that just encourages people with ' less skill ' to disfigure our landscape. Maybe the council aught to send the cleaning bill to Mr 'Banksy' rather than punish the people they employed to clean away this mess.

I live in central Bristol & welcome the diversity of living in a multicultural society with all the inherant sights - including graffiti which is well executed. BANSKY is very political & where else would we get such opinions placed in public view. His art sparks debate which is always good.
anthea mallaney, bristol,
I love the idea of this. Because its Banksy people think it should stay, whereas any other graphiti 'artist' should clearly have their work removed.
