A LEADING member of the arts establishment has criticised a 9ft bronze statue of Nelson Mandela that is due to stand outside the Houses of Parliament as “unsuitable as a major work of art.”
Charles Saumarez Smith, who starts as chief executive of the Royal Academy in September, wrote to a planning inquiry that Ian Walters, the sculptor, who died last year, lacked “distinction or artistic merit”.
Saumarez Smith, who at the time was director of the National Gallery, wrote: “Ian Walters would strike me as not necessarily the best choice as sculptor.
“His principal qualifications for this project are that he has already done one bust of Nelson Mandela and that he has met the sitter, but not that he is regarded by anyone, even including the supporters of the project, as a sculptor of any public distinction or artistic merit.”
Saumarez Smith also questioned why the commission was not open to competition. He said: “I am, to be honest, perplexed as to why a project on this scale and of this public importance has not followed any of the normal rules of public competition.”
The estimated £500,000 cost will be met largely by the Greater London Authority. Mandela is set to unveil the statue on August 29. Antiwar protesters were removed from Parliament Square last week in preparation.

First of all, to all of you going on about why Nelson Mandela's statue is in the UK, ask yourselves what David Livingston's statue is doing in Zimbabwe, or Cecil John Rhodes and all the other pathetic colonisors statues on African soil. Secondly that money could certainly have been put to better use, such as helping the poorest of the poor. People in this world certainly have money to waste building £500, 000 statues whilst others are starving to death. How ridiculous!

He is a symbol of moral courage and determination all over the world. There is nothing that is much in honouring one of the most admired leaders of time.

Nelson Mandela's legacy should not be remebered by a 9ft chunk of metal! A more fitting tribute to this great statesman would be to pump that money into helping the poorest of the poor with , for example ,a small housing project or a school named after him or something of that sort. This absurd idea is a waste of taxpayers money is not (I believe) what Nelson Mandela would want after spending spent 27 years in prison because of his stand against the heresy of Apartheid.

Mandela's international standing as a statesman is unquestionable; he of all people represents the very best in all of us. Humanity is very much blessed by his deeds, good nature and statesmanship. The statue is a worthy memorial of a man who gave his people and all that are oppressed hope. We salute Mandela as a great leader who deserves a place right before the mother of parliament.

Another statue of Mandela in the Capital. Why? Since when have we erected statues of foreigners in this country? Surely it belongs in South Africa. Mandela has no importance in this country and to be honest, I don't even see his importance in South Africa. F W de Klerk ended apartheid. The act of one group voluntarily handing over power to another group is surely unprecedented in history. Surely he's the real hero.
What exactly has Mandela done to merit such deification? His country's been in decline since the ANC took power. He never criticises African dictators or their brutality. Is it because he seems to be a nice man?

A statue of Nelson Mandela to be placed in Parliament Square â why â what possible reason can there be for putting it here, or anywhere else in the UK. The only place this should be put is somewhere in South Africa. Ken Livingstone and his crony pc mates should be more concerned with matters pertinent to the UK in general and London in particular, than they are in a person convicted and locked up for terrorism in South Africa. What a bunch of wasters they are. How much has this cost and who is paying the bill. What relevance is Mandela to Parliament, London or the UK? And the question of whether this statue is a work of art or not is irrelevant to this argument
