Antony Gormley’s One & Other
Gormley’s project to put Britons on display on the fourth plinth of Trafalgar Square opens for business, 24/7, on July 6 (until Oct 14). Thousands have already signed up to have their hour in his glass box.
RA Summer Exhibition/Venice Biennale
The theme at the Royal Academy this year is Making Space, one that should at least get an interesting reaction from one of its coordinators, the maverick architect Will Alsop (June 8-Aug 16). Meanwhile, even if you can’t get a ticket on EasyJet, the Biennale’s ripples will be felt here. Yoko Ono and John Baldessari will be rewarded for their lifetime achievements; video artist/film-maker Steve McQueen is manning the British Pavilion (June 7-Nov 22).
Jeff Koons
The controversial American post-pop artist comes to the Serpentine (July 2-Sept 13) with his Popeye Series sculptures. They should be exactly what they say on the spinach can.
Royal gems
The V&A opens another new gallery, in honour of Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert, whose collection of bel objets belonging to Catherine the Great, Louis XV et al will be exhibited (June 30). Another set of gems will be the paintings of the Maharajah of Jodhpur, which come to the British Museum for their first ever exhibition in Europe (May 28-Aug 23).
The Tates
Futurism will be the big draw at Tate Modern, highlighting the lightning-strike movement that lit up the pre-first world war years. Umberto Boccioni and a string of other adventurous Italians feature (June 12-Sept 20). Tate Britain, meanwhile, offers work from British artist Richard Long, his first big show in the capital for nearly 20 years (June 3-Sept 6). And Tate Liverpool collaborates with New York’s Moma to create Colour Chart: Reinventing Colour, 1950 to Today — a handy way of assembling Warhol, Yves Klein and Richter under one bright umbrella (May 29-Sept 23).
Serpentine Gallery Pavilion
Always remarkably ambitious, this programme of annual temporary pavilions has featured everyone from Zaha Hadid to Frank Gehry. This year it is the turn of the poetic Japanese architects SANAA, who envisage not so much a building as a fluid, ethereal canopy meandering through the trees. A full programme of events will take place there, and of course there will be a cafe (Hyde Park, from July).
