KNOCK ABOUT
Anyone with an interest in indie films and YouTube will have probably seen the now infamous clip of the director David O. Russell unleashing a barrage of vile expletives at Lily Tomlin on the set of I Heart Huckabees. There have been shoddy reenactments, but now comes a cunning parody from a professional. The director Judd Apatow’s latest movie, Knocked Up, stars Seth Rogen as a slacker who impregnates his career-driven girlfriend. No doubt seeing the value of a bit of viral marketing, Apatow has produced a fake video in which we are led to believe that Michael Cera ( Arrested Development), was fired and replaced by Rogen because of his acting deficiencies. The whole thing is hilarious enough to make you forget that Apatow is basically trying to sell his movie. tinyurl.com/2eceae
BLOG OF THE WEEK
Film, music and lovers of the avant-garde and obscure will find a soulmate in the blogger behind A Million Keys. Ceci Moss boasts of having been “involved with music, art and culture” for ten years and certainly knows her stuff, going by the discerning taste and critical eye displayed in posts on such subjects as the craftmanship of the strange electronic musical instruments made by Brian and Leon Dewan, underground cassette culture and Paris art exhibitions on the theme of “waiting”. MP3s and beautiful illustrative photos also go some way towards making this blog a compulsory destination for people tired of humdrum mainstream arts. amillionkeys.com
IMAGE OF THE DAY
Painting-a-day websites and blogs have become a fairly common form of artistic expression in cyberspace. Many are exercises in prolific output, but few are as beautiful and evocative as Postcard from Provence. In 2005 the British artist Julian Merrow-Smith took it upon himself to post a small oil painting on his site almost every day and has not let up since.
Documenting the changing seasons of the southeastern French region so idealised in Peter Mayle’s books, his artworks include colourful Cézanne-like still lives (such as Tomato, Basil and Aubergine, above) and vivid sea and landscapes, as well as some wonderfully stern-looking Lucien Freud-style self-portraits. www.shiftinglight.com
JOOST BOOST
Having founded the internet telephone service Skype and controversial peer-to-peer file sharing application Kazaa, it is easy to conclude that Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis are on a quest to scare the living bejesus out of traditional media and technology providers. Now with Joost they have gone even further.
This latest project turns your computer into an instant on-demand TV service and creates the television channel that you always wanted. Once you have downloaded a special Joost player you can then browse current content from such respectable sources as Aardman Animation, MTV and National Geographic. And although it is currently invite only, it gives you tips on how you can gain access such as asking existing users very nicely if they have a spare invitation. www.joost.com
