BUILDING BLOCKS
Others may have consigned Lego to their childhood, but the Italian artist Marco Pece uses the little plastic bricks and figures to imitate fine art. He posts his work on Flickr under the pseudonym Udronotto, and recreations include Leonardo’s The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa, and, perhaps best of all, an intricate take on Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks at the Diner ( above). Standing out from his more standard artistic oeuvre, his Lego work is both cute and ingenious. flickr.com/photos/udronotto
PODCASTS OF THE WEEK
The National Theatre is busy promoting its work through an illuminating series of podcasts including the writer Philip Pullman and the Archbishop of Canterbury discussing a “crisis of childhood” with reference to its production of His Dark Materials. It has also spread its tentacles into YouTube, with clips including the actor Paterson Joseph lying on the floor of his dressing room and explaining the original impact of Eugene O’Neill’s The Emperor Jones on Broadway. www.nationaltheatre.org.uk www.youtube.com
BLOG OF THE WEEK
The New York Times has recognised the public demand for access to the thoughts and tastes of the famous with a blog entitled “living with music”, in which writers produce playlists of their most beloved songs. Recent contributors include Irvine Welsh, who states that he would never have written Trainspotting were it not for the Iggy Pop and James Williamson album Kill City – and other Stooges classics, Raw Power and Metallic K.O. papercuts.blogs.nytimes. com/tag/living-with-music/
CULT CLASSICS
The massive success of Wikipedia has encouraged the creation of a slew of similar, but far more specialised, wiki-style web encyclopaedias. However, among those best served by this cyberspace development are the lovers of American sci-fi. For Star Wars fanatics, there is Wookieepedia, with more than 50,000 articles, and regularly amusing Quotes of the Day. The Battlestar Wiki plays to fans of the original and reimagined Battlestar Galactica series, while Memory Alpha covers Star Trek with “the most definitive, accurate, and accessible encyclopaedia and reference” available. starwars.wikia.com en.battlestarwiki.org memory-alpha.org
