VIDEOS OF THE WEEK
While many will have regarded the Transformers movie as a cinematic nadir, others happily wallow in nostalgia for the 1980s cartoons. DR. SMOOV and his work will delight the latter group. His videos on YouTube use footage from the original series and spot-on vocal impressions to create cartoons for (relatively) grown-up Transformers fans. The Rude Awakening of Optimus Prime, for one, has become an internet classic. In it, the great leader is resurrected and voices his disappointment at how far downhill the Autobots have slumped since his death – with a good deal of angry swearing. Cue heaps of juvenile laughter. www.youtube.com/user/
DRSMOOV OLD JOKES’ HOME
You no longer have to wait around on a rainy Sunday afternoon to catch a British sitcom repeat. TV Comedy Classics has a selection for you to download right now. Promising that it is “100 per cent safe, 100 per cent legal, 100 per cent official” (not that there is a thriving black market in old episodes of Executive Stress), this site offers retro titles for downloading.
While the site is still in its infancy, titles already available include Bless this House and George and Mildred. You will even find the once hugely popular Love Thy Neighbour, which will never be repeated on mainstream TV because of its central racial conflict. www.tvcomedyclassics.com
BLOG OF THE WEEK
You won’t know the name, but you will certainly be reminded of Gilbert Gottfried’s classic performances in such films as Problem Child 1 and 2 and Aladdin (as the parrot) once you catch a word or two of his, ahem, unique vocal delivery. But thankfully you won’t hear his truly irritating intonation on his occasional but entertaining blog, in which the stand-up comedian rails against the iniquities of the Canadian immigration service and being bleeped on Howard Stern’s radio show. The features and info on his personal website reveal him as rather smarter than the cartoon chump-for-hire you might have expected www.gilbertgottfried.com
FACES OF 2007
Bored of all the internet photography projects? If they were all as beautifully shot as Bill Wadman’s 365 Portraits ( above) then you wouldn’t be. The New York-based snapper is on a mission to shoot and post one portrait every day of 2007 on his website. As he says: “The photograph will have been taken that day, and each day will be a different person. Some will be in the studio, some will be in the wild.” The work is uniformly excellent, with site visitors often contributing gushing comments about them. Wadman simply hopes that “they will all be interesting”. www.365portraits.com
