Q How can I get rid of the horrible green sticky stuff that’s accumulated on the roof of my conservatory? I think it’s from nearby trees. No joy from my pressure washer.
A Your pressure washer is a good idea, but you need something with more welly to cut through the stickiness, such as a rotary wash-brush accessory to go on the end of the washer. Most manufacturers do them, and B&Q sells its own, called the Universal Rotary Wash Brush, £11.48 (0845 8500175; www.diy.com), which comes with four adaptors to suit most makes of electric pressure washers. It’s like a giant washing-up brush with soft bristles, so is safe to use on glass; the rotary action will get rid of the dirt. I’d also use proper pressure-washer detergent: something like Kärcher Wash & Wax (to prevent streakiness), £9 for 5 litres from Tesco Direct (0845 6004411; www.tesco.com). Rinse and allow to dry.
Once cleaned, think about treating the roof with Clear-Vision Windows & Glass Furniture Kit from Ritec (020-8344 8210; www.clearshield.biz), £57.45 inc p&p. It’s not cheap and a bit of a faff, but forms an invisible barrier to help repel dirt, and should last between two and five years. It includes a protector that chemically bonds to the glass and repels water, which means you shouldn’t have to clean the glass so often, and when you do, it’ll be easier. The kit has all you need for a three to four-bed house, so there will be plenty for your conservatory.
Q My daughter owns a very large and solid toy sheep – one you can sit on – and he’s become rather grubby. His fur looks like sheep’s wool, but I’m not sure what the material actually is. What can I do to freshen him up?
A Just sponge him down gently with a little warm water and a drop of mild detergent for washing woollens, followed by a clean, damp cloth to rinse. Don’t get him too wet, or you could damage the filling and/or have problems with mildew (and that would be another e-mail to me!). Allow to dry naturally, or use a hairdryer on a low setting, gently teasing to fluff up the pile. If he’s a bit smelly, freshen him up by sprinkling bicarbonate of soda over his surface, then rub in gently and leave for at least an hour before vacuuming with an upholstery nozzle.
