Another week, another skyscraper is announced in Dubai. However, the Dynamic Tower, designed by the architect David Fisher, is quite different. The 420-metre tower, with an hotel, offices and flats, is permanently on the move: each of its floors can rotate 360 degrees.

Fisher, who is married to a descendent of William Shakespeare, says that he can charge more per square foot because each unit commands a complete view. He told The Times: “The idea came when I was in Miami. A friend told me that one apartment, which overlooked the ocean, was worth $3million but another, which, didn't was worth $1.8million. I started thinking about this dynamic tower.”

Residents of old-fashioned static buildings may wonder at the safety of a moving building. But Fisher believes there will be demand for other such towers in Moscow, London, Paris and New York. The Dubai Tower, above, is due to be completed in 2010. Fisher also claims that he is breaking another mould: floors will be factory-manufactured and assembled on site - a low-cost technique that he insists will be copied elsewhere.
