“I have been interested in photography since my early teens. When I was at Manchester University studying English I took pictures for the student newspaper and in my third year was its picture editor. Afterwards I took a press photography course at Norton College, Sheffield. I freelanced as a photographer in Manchester for six months before joining a photographic agency in Bradford. For the competition The Times asked me to take a newsworthy, stand-alone picture that tells the story. My picture was of fans outside Old Trafford celebrating Manchester United’s victory over Chelsea in the Champions League final. I enjoy the opportunity that photography gives you to meet people and witness events that you would not normally. The camera gives you access and that is a real privilege.”

James' comment is not in the least pretentious. Its a shorthand for acknowledging that photography is a means by which you engage in other peoples realities. Far from pretentious, it's actually a humble acknowledgement that his photography is dependent on the participation of his subjects.

hold on,
I dont completely agree with the top comment.
if you have a camera it can take you different places and the respect you can earn from the source you are coming from, for example a newspaper.
I think the work is really good, and its a good point about where photography can take you. :)

"What a pretentious remark." unquote
What a pretentious remark that is!
James Glossop's point is obviously that having a camera gets you access to certain locations and situations that you wouldn't necessarily have access to otherwise and that he appreciates that.
Chris, Elland, England

What a pretentious remark.
The camera is simply a tool, like a spanner, or a tin opener, nothing else.
