Good news for Paris Hilton, who has had her prison sentence halved and will serve her time - about 23 days in all - in a special segregated unit reserved for celebrities.
The hotel heiress will spend up to 23 hours a day in a two person cell, one of a block of 12 similar cells set aside for prisoners liable to attract too much unwanted attention from ordinary inmates.
Her cellmate, if she has one, could be a police officer, a politician - or another reality TV star.
While behind bars at the Century Regional Detention Center - a 2,200-inmate jail in suburban Lynwood, California, that is liable to be nicknamed the Lynwood Hilton from now on - Hilton will have an hour a day out of her cell to shower, watch television, exercise outside and make phone calls.
The 26-year-old was sentenced to jail this month for driving without a licence while she was still on probation over an alcohol-linked reckless driving conviction.
She remained at liberty while she appealed against her sentence, resulting in today's announcement that her 45-day term was being halved. A judge has ordered her to present herself at prison to start her sentence by June 5.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said that Hilton's sentence was shortened after jail officials gave her credit for good behaviour. The factors taken into account in calculating the credit included the fact that she bothered to appear for her latest court date, he said.
Earlier this month Hilton posted a plea on her MySpace website, urging fans to sign a petition to pardon her "mistake" because she provides beauty and excitement to "(most of) our otherwise mundane lives".
Fans were encouraged to appeal to Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Governor of California, to keep her out of jail.
She wrote on her blog: "My friend Joshua started this petition, please help and sihn (sic) it. i LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!"
The petition reads: "Paris Whitney Hilton is an American celebrity and socialite. She is an heiress to a share of the Hilton Hotel fortune, as well as to the real estate fortune of her father Richard Hilton. She provides hope for young people all over the U.S. and the world. She provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives."
It adds: "We, the American public who support Paris, are shocked, dismayed and appalled by how Paris has been the person to be used as an example that Drunk Driving is wrong...
"This petition is to ask Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to pardon Paris Hilton for her mistake. Please allow her to her return to her career and life."

I just glad my life isn't so mundane I need her beauty and excitement.
DanO, Mt. Vernon, USA
Send her to real jail! let her get a taste of what every other American goes through when they break the law!
I have no idea why any human being would ever look up to PH, but they really need to get out more.
Ty Pennington has shown more remorse for his drunk driving, and he only did it once, PH has done this a million times, and been caught doing it 4 times. And she still thinks 23 days in a hotel is too harsh.
Ben, Montevallo, Alabama
I'm no fan of PH but please stop the histrionics... her "fan club" posted the plea on her "My Space" site. I've noticed the "press" has a tendency to exploite/manipulate some of the facts in these types of cases. (Why you all got to be haters?)
To be honest, the fact that I know that little tid-bit indicates that this case has been covered to death and that I have WAY TOO MUCH FREE TIME!
Brian, Los Angeles, USA/CA
I don't know what the normal sentence is in California for what she did, but I hope like hell they didn't cut her any slack. Even after the conviction she was taped trying to get her boyfriend to let her drive after leaving a club, so it's not as if she is repentant.
John McAchran, Irving, TX
"...jail officials gave her credit for good behaviour. The factors taken into account in calculating the credit included the fact that she bothered to appear for her latest court date, he said. "
Hmmm. I didn't know simply appearing for a court date is considered "good bahviour". I highly doubt this would be considered good bahaviour for the average person, in the eyes of a judge.

Ms. Hilton would like to be taken seriously but being shown outrageous favoritism shows her for what she really is.... a spoiled, cry baby who doesn't want to pay the price for her reckless, immature behavior.
Dianne May, Reno, Nevada
All Paris had to do was what the court told her to do. No one person is above the laws in our country. Just because she is famous for achieving nothing does not make her an american icon. One has to actually do something somewhat credible to attain that kind of status. She got caught! Botton line. Be an adult an do your 23 days with some form of dignity. Good luck Paris.
noel , shreveport/la., U.S.A
There is far better petition at the same place calling for Paris to be sent down- well done all those who signed it
MGB, Carmarthen, Wales
How do you get time off for good behavior when you haven't done any time yet! Who says justice is blind? What a disgrace.
Garth, San Jose, CA
"She provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives." What a magnificently true statement! What would my life really be like without Paris!!! It is the mystery of her that is so intriquing! The mystery of what real purpose she actually serves in our society. I have been racking my brains, and I just can't figure out any purpose that she serves with her life, other than consumption, and being a really good moving mannequin! How truly noble! YOu go girl!
Dan, Albuquerque,
We who lead mundane lives give no thanks to Paris Hilton for being a poor example of the rich and wanna-be famous.
She deserves no respect for leading a life of doing absolutely nothing. If she can learn to spend her time and money on doing good deeds anonymously rather than on material things and living la dolce vita, maybe then she can rightfully earn her place in the real world (aka the mundane life) and the respect of others.
Gwen, Honolulu, Hawaii
Dear Governor Schwartzenegger:
Please send Paris Hilton to Maricopa County, Arizona to serve her FULL term. I believe she will find the Army tents there more appropriate for her sentence than the "Special" unit she will stay in at Lynwood.
Seems the old saying is still true - "Money talks".
Dave, Dallas, TX
PLEASE! my life is not " mundane " and i wish that Paris would actually be treated like a real person and have to go to jail for what she did! 23 days in a special cell is not jail. just goes to show how the government can be bought if you have right amount of cash and the right name.
SHAWNA, st andrews, canada
I am sorry but this is total favoritism to a celebrity -- the reduction in sentence is uncalled for and as well a disgrace -- if a reduction was given for appearing at sentencing -- I am amazed because it is an absolute requirment to appear -- I can not understand the reduction expect maybe peer pressure -- this is a farce on the justice system in the US -- Ms Hilton does not add excitment to my mundane life -- she makes my fellow Americans look foolish and also that American Justice is not equal.
Michael, Bristol, United Kingdom
"..credit for good behaviour" even before she started her jail term?!
I wonder how many convicted individuals got good time off while sitting at home, I wonder how many rot in jail for lesser offences........
The next thing we will learn is after 7 days she is being paroled for being an exemplinary prisoner (stayed on her cell phone all through), and she will go out there and do it all over again and her pack of wayward brats will emulate her.
What money will buy you, some example of justice. I love America. [shaking head in amazement]
WeeFree, Compton, LA
let the spoil brat do her time just like everybody else why should she get any special treatment .she did the crime she has to do the time.
Frances , houston, texas
I don't believe any of us really believed this girl would actually serve 45 days. I just love the justifications they try to use. How does one show good behavior before they even serve time? Is whining good behavior? I love that she gets credit for 'bothering to appear at her last court date.' I hope from here on out people start citing this same precedent whenever they're sentenced. 'Well your honor, I know I killed 3 people, but you know, I showed up here.'
Mark, Norristown, PA
My sister almost died when she was stuck by a drunk driver. I don't care who you are, if you drink don't drive! You can ruin your life and others forever. My sister's life was not the only life effected. My life, my children's life, my brother's life, his family life, my parent's life, my sister's best friend, her best friend's parents ,who treated my sister like their own daughter ,and all her friends and coworkers, etc. For many months we prayed and nationally prayed. All for someone to have a drink and drive. Paris Hilton or just your next door neighbor, no one should drive after drinking!
Mary Ann Fontenot, Walker, LA, USA
I still think they should have sent her to tent city, this is still like she isnt in jail??????
Good behavior and showing up to court hearings, wasnt she late to one of them....give me a break.
I am glad Gov. Schwarzenegger didnt pardon her.
I am so glad my daughter doesnt see her as a "ROLE" model
Patty, Pueblo West, Co
Paris Hilton is nothing but a spoiled, rotton child//////////who is used to getting her way no matter way, imagine she adds beauty etc, etc, pass the barf trays!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paris just flaunts her mistakes(as she calls it) by being seeing driving very often without a license and drunk.
I think this CHILD should get a much needed lesson on being proper. My cousin was killed by a drunk driver, as many more have and Paris should not have been given a break, but then again THE RICH ALWAYS DO. Too bad!!!!!!!!!!!
Harry Duffy, Vancouver, BC Canada
I think she should spend more time in jail. What is this saying to all the other people that are not famous and get DUIs. "Oh well" if a famous person can get a away with less time I should be able to as well. Well thats not true any other person would be spending more time and not getting special treatment . I think she sould be treaded like any other human that gets in trouble with the law, She along with any body else is not above the law.
Jillian D, Boynton Beach, FL
She doesn't provide beauty and excitement to my anything other than mundane life. Statements like that just show how self-centered a spoiled child she is. What's worse is that our society allows it.
Paris needs to do time in general population. Since her charge was alcohol related, put her to work mopping out the drunk tank.
I'd like to start a petition to make America a Paris Hilton-Free-Zone. Let her stay in one of daddy's hotels in exile.
BanParis, Ft Lauderdale, FL
confirmed once again, is the fact that money, power and fame buy justice. she knew what she was doing, she just feels entitled for the above reasons.
