Sometimes you see a story, read on, and decide that someone, somewhere, has entirely lost the plot.
The headline was “Texting addiction could be a sign of infidelity”. The specialist law firm Pannone claimed that the most commonly cited telltale signs of a wayward wife in divorce cases were a sudden devotion to texts but then went on to add...boob jobs. Pardon?
If a woman with breasts heading south acquires a bit of upward lift and proud perkiness, does it seriously betoken a lover in the offing?
And where does this line of reasoning leave Peter Andre, who allegedly encouraged his wife Katie Price (aka Jordan) to have surgery recently to reduce the size of her boobs?
Husbands apparently feel that a new ten-years-younger version of their wife can't possibly think that the unaugmented, unreconstructed man in jim-jams she finds nightly in the marital bed is attractive. Jealousy and suspicions creep in: surely there must be someone else.
It's not true gents, it really isn't. It's a social trend. You only have to look to the US. Despite that country's financial state being rather worse than ours, US headlines last week claimed that the number of cosmetic surgeons in the country is about to increase fivefold. This suggests that American women believe cosmetic procedures are no longer luxuries that fall off the list during times of hardship but essentials that enable them to continue to live life to the full. What happens there comes here very soon.
Cosmetic surgery is no longer the well-kept secret of a few. The most recent figures in Britain show that breast enlargement remains the most common procedure for women, with 6,497 operations performed last year, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). This was up 12.2 per cent on 2006.
But, in fact, the number of Britons going under the knife may be higher, as these numbers don't represent all cosmetic surgery practices in the UK, and increasing numbers of us are opting for cheap surgery abroad.
When the whole herd gets involved, infidelity on such a grand scale seems unlikely. So the evidence suggests that husbands are worrying unnecessarily.
But it is also the case - and it has been a consistent finding of research studies over the past decade - that about 7 to 15 per cent of those who go for surgery have body dysmorphic syndrome and imagine themselves to be ugly. Typically these women are dissatisfied by the outcome of surgery, and if asked about ideal breast size, these women always want larger breasts than those without this syndrome. Cognitive behavioural therapy is more appropriate here, asit helps to tackle their core psychological issues.
Meanwhile, husbands should relax. Women are having surgery mostly for their own sakes, which includes feeling sexier with their chosen partner.

i, personally, have no idea why jordan or any other woman would ever do that to herself. i have a very similar body type to that--basically a stick figure with big boobs--and it's an absolute nightmare. i feel like i look like a clown and i can't wait to get a breast reduction when i turn 18.

No one is blaming America, Thalassa - the author is just observing that trends which happen in American tend to travel across the Atlantic and be followed here: "What happens there comes here very soon."
Susan, London, UK
It's also a shame that so many parents in the US give plastic surgery as a gift mind you, to their children for graduation presents and birthdays. Their bodies aren't even fully developed yet. And what are the psychological ramifications of this? What is this telling those who see this?
Victoria, Colorado, USA
Balloon breasts; collagen lips; lipo'd thighs and bum; botoxed everything; masses of make-up; v.v blonde "big" hair; 14-year old's wardrobe; large german 4x4...ahhh...the epitomy of what Joburg considers "beautiful" in a woman.
Nic, Johannesburg, S-Africa
Sadly I can believe this - it seems that the happier someone is in their relationship the less they become concerned with their appearance. If your partner suddenly develops an unprovoked interest in losing weight/plastic surgery you may want to consider exactly who it is they are trying to impress?
Tim, London, uk
No matter what it is from obesity to a trend in boob jobs, Brits blame America. No American is standing with a gun at your heads forcing you to wolf down those extra calories or to have your breasts worked on, Lots of Brits, too, have more money than sense.
thalassa, quimper, france
I believe organic is good for you. Including boobs.
Lasse Koivisto, Tuusula, Finland
This trend shows how much pressure society places on women to be 'perfect'-there's no point in saying its not true. This is intensifying, not getting less. Today looks=money=power=desirability. Ths only change is that pressure is now on men as well. Aren't we developed?!?
Stuart, Johannesburg, South Arica
Pete from cardiff - with that sort of attitude you wont have to worry about divorce...!
Angela, Aalborg, Denmark
IF I were to marry ANYONE with artificial bits in them, and did not know, divorce would immediately follow. Attachment to her relatives-bad enough, pawing skin-clad plastic? THE LIMIT!
peter harrap, cardiff, UK
Tete, the grass is always greener. I have a naturally large bust, which meant, as a teenager, men felt they could pass crude comments on my chest size too. Tops for the workplace can be a nightmare: it is very difficult not to show some cleavage or get clothes to fit properly across the chest area.
Kate, London, England
Not many female comments on this one...
Howard, Manchester,
"the bigger the better" real or fake, that's what i have to say
Nicky C, Sheffield,
Tete - actually I do!! And men pay attention to me because of the whole package - a body in proportion, personality and brains. I've NEVER been laughed at. Some clothes don't fit true, but every woman has that for every body shape. As for "embarrassing" - why? What are you embarrassed about exactly?
Laura Roberts, London, United Kingdom
I have natural large boobs and I honestly can't see why anyone would want them.
M. R., Stockport,
Could cause men to be more jealous that some other man might grab the "new" appearance wife.
G.Gibson, Sydney, Australia
i'm surprised (but pleased!) to see so many men here who would actually prefer the natural (smaller, even) boobage > big plastic ones. guess our perceptions of you are mistaken....you just have to stop staying so quite and let yourselves be heard! =)
Elena, West Mids, UK
What about babies? Don't they have a say in all this? If they are faced with massive over-sized breasts with silicon flavoured milk from the beginning of life, what about the psychological trauma? How will they cope with adult life having been brought up with the danger of suffocation hanging over?
CCCracker, Manchester,
- many women who have their breasts surgically agmented lose feeling in them - which, in case there are any men who do not already know it, are very sensitive and sensual organs. so, the choice , it seems, is LOOK Sexy - or, FEEL sexy.
tommie, Leiden, The Netherlands
Small is beautiful and natural. My ex wife had breast implants, it was like touching two pieces of concrete stuffed inside thin pillows. I lost respect for her, I have to admit, I thought she was brighter than that. She wanted men to stare at her chest to make her feel better about herself. Sad.
Gary, Newbury, United Kingdom
Does anyone else agree with me? It's got to the stage where there are so many botoxed, face lifted, massive-breasted women around, that the sight of a petite, natural, interesting-faced, small breasted woman is incredibly beautiful. They're natural, healthy, pert, in proportion with REAL confidence.
Tom Franklin, Newbury, United Kingdom
laura, I bet you have idea what is like to be flat chested, with boys not paying attention to you and even laughing at you all throughout your youth. Clothes never fit well at all. And when is time to wear summer clothes or a bathing suit is very embarrasing.
tete, buenos aires, argentina
They do if you don't notice she's had one !
Peter , Worthing,
If the woman in the picture above was my wife, no boob job in the world would make me consider ending THAT marriage!
Andrew, Godalming, UK
And if a man increased the size of his chest that would be ok? Or do I have mental problemd because I go to a gym three times a week?
Bruce, Rochester, USA
A boob-job is not the basis of my marriage. I don't care if she gets one or doesn't. I wouldn't change my mind about her if she got, god forbid, breast cancer and ended up with no boobs. My wife would still be the most beautiful woman in the world. You are creating contention from a non-issue.
Jim P, Sacramento, United States
As you said, here in the states boob jobs are about misplaced priorities......worrying about superficial, external things when the real problem is the unhappiness with ones self on the inside.........
William, Clayton, USA
I'd have to see them before I form an opinion........
Cliff, Denver, Colorado, USA
Like me, there are men who prefer a woman with normal-size or even small breasts.
Big breasts make a woman look top-heavy, small breasts suggest youthfulness and health.
Huge balloon breasts are repulsive. They don't look as if they're part of the body, but something artificially attached. Ugh.
alan, germany,
In the USA, the cult of appearance has gone so far that looking "great" is no longer optional unless you want to be thought a crank or a derelict. Perfect, glistening white teeth; perfect, highly coiffed hair; manicure, pedicure, hair removal, and of course tons of cosmetics are de rigueur.
Tom Welsh, Basingstoke,
Never will understand why a woman would ever do this. It says it makes them feel more confident?
I, as a man do not care about the size of a woman's breast, yet as I grow older it seems in this materialistic society, women bother more about size and superficiality than males, straight one that is
Mark, London, England
Here in the States, boob jobs are all about self-display and narcissism, not sex, the other, or a failing marriage.
John J. Kavanagh, Mercer Island, US of A
Anyone who somehow thinks inserting material under their chest to inflate the size of their breasts is any kind of positive behaviour, has mental problems, and instead of seeing a plastic surgeon should seek a psychiatrist instead.
Likewise anyone who says "I'm doing it for me". What utter tripe.
Laura Roberts, London, United Kingdom
Look at that photo of Jordan. She's a freak. It is horrendous - her boobs are totally out of proportion with her body, they're fake, there is NOTHING attractive about it whatsoever.
As a man, why on earth would I find 2 fake balloons "sexy"? As for "boosting confidence" they're not an achievement!
James, London, United Kingdom
Boob jobs being performed by BAAPS? You couldn't make this stuff up!!
Ian , Harwich, UK
First I thought, "why would a boob job end a marriage?" Then I noticed that you mean... repairment.
Matt, Berlni, Germany
