Peers voted yesterday for an enhanced compensation package for 125,000 workers who have lost their retirement funds, the second defeat for the Government in the House of Lords over its Pensions Bill.
The Lords’ vote in favour of a Pensions Lifeboat Fund came as some affected workers staged a protest outside Downing Street. The amendment put forward by Lord Skelmersdale came despite a government concession in the Commons, which extended the Financial Assistance Scheme to cover members of pension funds that began winding up between January 1, 1997, and April 5, 2005.
The joint Conservative and Liberal Democrat amendment aims to treat the 125,000 equally with scheme members in the Pension Protection Fund, the scheme protecting workers whose retirement funds collapsed after 2005.
The Government was also defeated when peers backed a Conservative move to scrap the requirement for private pension annuities to be bought by the age of 75.

As Andrew Parr states how many times do the government have to be told they are wrong and must do better .
Mr Blair is concerned about his legacy well this is one mess he helped to create and yet has not solved . We hope that Gordon Brown does the decent thing and let his MP's have a free vote and not be in fear of the clunking fist
Meanwhile Tony rides off with his gold plated pension paid for by the taxpayers he refuses to help and by the way is is NOT and can never be 80%
Terry Monk, Camberley, Surrey
It will be interesting to see how Brown handles this once he takes over the reins of power. So far (as Chancellor) he has been obdurate in refusing to compensate these workers, putting more junior ministers up to defend his policy. If he continues to fight the battle, it will be indicative of how he intends to treat the population during his administration. This issue has the potential to cause him real political damage, as the protestors will not go away.
Peter Lapinskas, Dorking, Surrey
Delighted that Peers have voted in favour of a decent lifeboat . Peers could obviously see the injustice of why 120,000 hard working citizens who lost their pensions prior to 2005 should put up with an inferior lifeboat to those who loose their pensions now?
Well done My Lords.
MP's must if they are honest see the rationale for this and next time vote yes for the amendment. This injustice must end.
dave cole, dunwich, uk
Tony Blair and Gordon Brown should be ashamed to even think to try to over turn this ammendment this is the 5th time they have been voted against, do they not realise what we pensioners are going through ask them what they would do if they lost their pensions that we the tax payers are paying for, and the 80% that the FAS are suppose to be paying us what a laugh they are liars.PAY US OUT NOW we are not going away. And just remember Gordon we are the people that vote at the next election do the decent thing.
Val Day, hemel Hempstead,
Let us hope the Commons now do the decent thing and accept the Lord's ammendment. It is now 5-nil:
Parliamentary Ombusman
Select Committee
European Court
High Court (Judicial Review)
and now
the Lords
all say the goverment was wrong. How much evidence do they need?
Andrew Parr, Sheerness, Kent UK
Parliamentary Ombudsman,
P.A.S.C.
,E.C.J,
Judicial Review
& now House of Lords all support a proper remedy. How much longer can this government deny us justice?
