Led Zeppelin, the quintessential rock band, are set to reform for a money-spinning tour of the United States next year. The three surviving members of the band — singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bass player John Paul Jones — have patched up their differences and are said to be ready to hit the road.

They are likely to be joined by Jason Bonham, the son of their late drummer, John Bonham, who died in 1980 after a drinking binge. Insiders say they will be looking for offers of $10m (£6.4m) to tour American stadiums next summer.

Led Zeppelin reunions have been mooted in the past and come to nothing but this time the omens suggest the surviving members of the band will play their first concerts together for 23 years.

Plant, Page and Jones met two weeks ago at the offices of Trinifold, the company that manages Page and Plant, ostensibly to discuss the release next year of a DVD of the band’s classic live performances.

They buried the hatchet over the 1990s Unledded tour featuring Page and Plant. The first Jones knew about it was from reading a newspaper.

Trinifold, which in March had assets of just £14,000, was bought last week by Sanctuary, another music management company, in a £21m deal.

The owners, Bill Curbishley, who was a pall-bearer at Reggie Kray’s funeral, and his partner, Robert Rosenberg, will share an initial £8m but could get another £13m if their acts make big money from touring.

Trinifold’s fortunes have been buoyed by a successful American tour by the Who, who were reduced to two original members following the death of John Entwistle, the bass player, from a drug-induced heart attack in a Las Vegas hotel room in June. The band sold more than £20m worth of tickets.

Plant is currently touring Britain to promote his latest album, Dreamland.

Led Zeppelin are keen to revitalise their back catalogue. A spokesman for Trinifold said: “Jimmy is itching to do something, but there is nothing firm yet.”

A Led Zeppelin insider said: “It is all down to what they are going to earn out of it. If John Paul thinks he is going to be second fiddle he will turn it down and they can’t call it Zeppelin unless he agrees.”

Andy Adams, who runs annual conventions for Led Zeppelin fans in Crewe, said: “If it is going to happen it has to happen pretty soon. Jimmy Page will be 59 in January. It will be down to Robert once he gets his latest tour under his belt.”
