SIR PAUL McCARTNEY is fighting on a second front to prevent details of his private life being dragged into court as he enters the most bitter phase of his divorce from Heather Mills.
The former Beatle is understood to be trying to halt a legal action for libel and breach of privacy by his estranged wife against two newspaper publishers. If he is unsuccessful, the case could result in a public airing of lurid details of their private life.
The case is linked to the pair’s divorce currently going through the courts. Last week McCartney failed to seal a court agreement with Mills under which she would agree to a confidentiality clause as part of a £50m divorce settlement.
The libel and privacy action relates to the leaking last year of divorce papers in a fax to news organisations. It contained claims that McCartney was violent towards Mills.
McCartney, it was alleged, had grabbed Mills’s neck, cut her arm and pushed her over a coffee table in separate incidents.
He may be called as a witness in the action against Associated Newspapers, publishers of the Daily Mail; and News Group Newspapers, publishers of The Sun.
Sources close to the case said that if it reached court, much of the hearing was likely to be in public, although a judge may order that some parts be heard behind closed doors.
McCartney is determined to close all avenues to a public airing of details of his marriage.
“He is happy to deal with [the allegations in the fax], but only behind closed doors,” said one informed source. “That means in the divorce court.”
The allegations leaked last year were contained in papers faxed anonymously from a small shop in central London to the Associated Press agency in New York and the Press Association agency in Yorkshire.
A full-scale divorce hearing has been provisionally scheduled for the High Court in February following the stalling of last week’s talks.
McCartney’s offer of £50m if Mills agreed to maintain confidentiality about their private life is understood to include £15m to compensate her for loss of earnings from selling her story.
Mills’s friends say her refusal to accept the clause does not simply mean she is determined to reveal details of their life together in books or on talk shows.
She fears the clause may be used to prevent her defending herself if further allegations are made against her in connection with the marriage.
Contrary to some reports, the divorce hearing will be behind closed doors, a spokesman at the High Court confirmed.
If it were to reach the Court of Appeal, however, the case would become public.
McCartney is seeking a divorce from Mills on the grounds of her unreasonable behaviour.

She does not understand she is only making her situation worse. It would be in her interest to be silent - this is probably what got her into this mess in the first place with her husband. She acts (is) like a willful child and the public's response is predictable. When you are in a hole - stop digging.

Good on you Heather, Paul has had a great deal, all he has is money, but you have beauty and gave him a daughter, no comparison in my eyes. He is an old man now but you are still young. Why shouldn't he pay up dearly for this privilege?
You have guts and the media can't take it, they are used to calling the shots, good luck in the european courts. You will get the last laugh, don't let anyone break you, no one knows what the editors of these trash papers have hidden in their cupboards they can hide behind closed doors, it is high time someone found out.
Look after your daughter, she needs you, I think life has given you enough blows but you are a fighter.
I am sure the charities that you have helped would like to have their say, and I can only imagine what that would be! Your ordeal will soon be over and I hope you get a fair deal at the end of it all.

rose, blackpool,
I seem to recall when Paul McCARTNEY was an up and coming musician in the early years that Linda's family were the people supporting both of them,[ Lennon was the genius in that group].
Paul relied on Linda, -- he relied on Heather TO PROP UP HIS FLAGGING EGO but because of his now affluent lifestyle he is able to pay her off, [ NOT A PLEASANT THOUGHT FOR ANY WOMAN], HE DOES NOT GET MY SYMPATHY VOTE

Do not understand why Paul have to be unduly worried about his private life being made Public. The Public might get all excited initially with what ever allegation she might want to make but over time people will get fed up of the detail.
I am also of the view that the general public have little respect for this money hungry 'Kiss and Tell" person like what her first husband have to say about her.

Why does she feel the need to discuss their private life with the world? To make a few bob? What a silly woman. I hope she gets nothing.

The settlement includes £15 million for her not to write a book.
Would any of us buy her book? If any publisher goes out on a limb and gives her £15 million they are going to get stung, hard.

The woman has no shame.

Silence what? Throwing a wine glass or jumping from a high place in the bedroom in a bumble bees outfit!
The woman is bad news. Paul you fool.
Shoot, we all have our private lives.
This woman is disgusting.

Mills could have remained Lady McCartney, but she
rather chose to drop a place in History of Music that would have dignified her and her daughter.
She is now miscalculating, because unless she takes the 50M GBP that Sir Paul is giving her, she will never make that money by selling her dirty laundry anywhere in the world, not even in America!

Whether or not he was violent towards his wife is not a private matter - it is certainly not an issue of "private life". It is a criminal matter. The idea that whatever a man does to his wife behind closed doors is a "private" matter is reprehensible, false and fatuous.

He was naive, but probably also spoiled from all the years of fame and glory, and couldn't deal with the firecracker he married. His first wife may have been assertive in the world regarding her beliefs, but she always struck me as a submissive, easy-to-be-with sort of wife, as well as his number one fan. Heather is a completely different personality and too young to be part of the worshipful Beatlemania generation. Of course she married him for money and fame, that doesn't necessarily mean she was out to screw him with a multimillion dollar divorce suit, though. I think she probably hoped he would remain blindly in love with her. When that didn't happen it probably got ugly on both their parts. Of course she wouldn't want to give up the right to defend herself in public, who would? If she were just out for money she'd take it and the confidentiality clause and shut up. But she also wants to have popularity, and there just might be some validity to her claims as well.
Deanna, NYC,
Let her sue the tabloids. In all honesty, if Paul has not fed the media with information of any kind, then he has nothing to hide and should let Heather have her way in court with the offending media. That would either clear him of any suspician of tattling on their marriage. If he has leaked things to the media about their marriage then he has forfeited all rights demanding the same of her. I don't know these people but I can honestly say that what I've read is disgusting for two people who once shared an intimate life together. As simple a lifestyle as I lead, I would never want "secrets" from my marriage aired out into the public. So whomever has done such should be the one to pay the price.

I remember passing by Sir Paul sitting with his wife Heather and the baby in the early afternoon during a bank holiday Monday (in 2005?) a few months before their split .
It was at the Richoux restaurant in St John's Wood and he was wearing a red T-shirt and sitting in the most conspicuous place possible. - near the newspaper rack and where all had to pass by to go to and from the take-away (cakes etc) section to the seating area. He looked very sad and seemed to want eye contact. I thought at the time that this was unusual for a celebrity. Heather wore a long black coat and had her back to everyone with her attention focused on her baby.
I thought how unhappy he was and felt prompted to say something, but I chose to respect his privacy, even although he seemed to be looking for attention. A cry for help came to mind. I walked by and then returned to put back the newspaper in the rack. I could feel that he was living with one of his greatest mistakes and I truly felt for him.
Michael, London,
maybe she is & maybe she is not. Noone knows what goes on behind closed doors. Were you there to view their lives together?
Sharon, Nashville, USA, Tn
She took advantage of him at a low point as well. Go Paul.
Duncan Idaho, Humboldt, USA,CA
I don't know either of them personally (nor I assume do any of you) and if I did, it still wouldn't be anybody's business but theirs.
No-one except the two people themselves really know what goes on in a marriage. Being rich and famous doesn't make him a saint, and a dodgy past makes her guilty of nothing except having a dodgy past.
Whatever you think you know, marriage still takes two.

tk, glos,
If a judge agrees to pay her what she's worth, she'd walk away with nothing. Sir Paul has millions of loyal fans around the world. I think he could well stand some secrets of the past in his wedding leaking out. I for one wouldn't believe a word that comes out of Heather's mouth. Millions will agree with me. Pay up Sir Paul. Let her have her say, then sue to get your money back. You'll have your money back in less than a year! People may be interested for five minutes in what she has to say, then they'll switch off to her. I'm sure you'll be delighted to see the back of her! She was always only after one thing Sir Paul, to marry you and have a chance was her dream meal ticket for life. I believe she'll never find happiness, she'll waste her money and end up right back where she belongs!
